About the Author
Dr. Ed F. Vallowe, for many years, pastor of churches in Arkansas, Tennessee and Georgia; music and educational director in Missouri, Illinois and Texas, and for the past thirty eight years a full time evangelist, revivalist, and Bible conference prophecy teacher, has written some 24 books during his fifty years in the ministry.

He served for many years as the editor of the Revival Echoes newspaper and has travelled extensively conducting over 1900 revivals, and Bible conferences. He has taught the book of Revelation over 1200 times in 45 states and is one of the foremost authorities on prophecy in these last days.

He is in great demand as a speaker and Bible conference leader, and as an evangelist, and has always been able to make the Bible relevant to contemporary man.

At present, Dr. Vallowe is President of the Valo-Tours Travel Agency and conducts tours for Christians to the Middle East annually. His ministry has taken him around the world in 60 foreign countries preaching and teaching the Gospel message.

About the Author

RICHARD A. DEFUSCO, CFA, is a Professor of Finance at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He earned his CFA charter in 1999 and started CFA grading in 2000.

DENNIS W. McLEAVEY, CFA, is Faculty Advisor to the Ram Fund and Professor Emeritus of Finance and OR/MS at the University of Rhode Island. He obtained his CFA charter in 1990 and began CFA grading in 1995.

JERALD E. PINTO, PhD, CFA, has been at CFA Institute since 2002 as Visiting Scholar, Vice President, and now Director, Curriculum Projects in the Credentialing Division for the CFA and CIPM Programs.

DAVID E. RUNKLE, CFA, is Director of Quantitative Research for Trilogy Global Advisors, LP. He joined Trilogy in 2007 from Piper Jaffray, where he was an Investment Research Manager.

Really enjoyed both the workbook and book !!!

The workbook was in excellent condition and shipping was fast.

Bought this workbook a while back to add to my personal library and completely enjoyed reading the book as well as working all the problems/calculations that came in the study manual (workbook) that was purchased seperately.

While the book may not be for everyone I completely enjoyed reading the book and working all the calculations in the workbook. Would recommend the book to others who enjoy reading financial textbooks such as I do. However I would not encourage someone to read it and work all the calculations in the workbook unless they already have a solid understanding of finance otherwise it may be beyond the scope of their comprehension.

Note: The workbook and book were purchased for hobby reading since my academic and professional background is finance, however I am not a CFA or plan on sitting for the CFA Exam.

The book is laid out well and for the most part is logical and easy to follow. As most textbooks are it can be hard to read in large chunks. Very good book for finance and statistics.

This book describes the clinical application of the growing body of ideas and practices that has come to be known as narrative therapy. The primary focus is on the ways of working that have arisen among therapists who, inspired by the pioneering efforts of Michael White and David Epston, have organized their thinking around two metaphors: narrative and social construction. The authors are as concerned with attitude as with technique. Believing that a solid grounding in the worldview from which narrative practices spring is essential, they begin with an overview of the historical, philosophical, and ideological aspects of the narrative/social constructionist perspective. This involves also telling the story of their own development as particular therapists in a particular part of the world during a particular historical period. The heart of the book is devoted to specific clinical practices: locating problems in their sociocultural context, opening space for alternative stories, developing stories, questioning, reflecting, thickening plots, and spreading the news. Each practice is described, located in relation to the ideas and attitudes that support it, and illustrated with clinical examples. In addition to conversations with people illustrating particular practices, three transcripts are included to show the subtle use of questions to develop alternative, preferred realities. Drawing upon the thinking of White and Epston, Karl Tomm, and others, the final chapter looks at the ethics of relationship that guide narrative therapists in the use of specific practices.

Comprehensive, accessible introduction to narrative therapy

Although everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I thought it pertinent in this circumstance to offer mine. Ruplins of Portland states that "Freedman and Combs do not grasp the constructivist approach used by White and Epston." I was really taken aback by such an assertion, because my reading of the book couldn't be more at odds. I welcomed the book when it was published and was delighted that it provided under one cover a comprehensive and accessible introduction to narrative therapy without compromising the relevance of its politics and poetics. In addition, the authors' chapter on questions extends narrative work in ways I have read and re-read very carefully. I strongly recommend everyone who I am involved with in training/consultation and those seeking merely an introduction to narrative therapy to read it. If I were considering a degree program of any sort, I would expect this book to be required reading. I agree with Michael White when he described the book as "quite a feat!"

I went to a University whereby post-modernism was not par nor parcel of our curriculum. It was when I got out of school that I began to see the potential and methodology of Narrative Therapy. After buying White and Epston's material and seeking out therapists, I was advised to buy this book. An excellent practical application of an excellent theory. Kudos to the authors. I find this book particularly helpful for working with troubled adolescents and college age clients. Looking forward to further practical publications!

Interesting but theoretically disappointing.

Though this is a useful guide to Narrative technique, the authors do not grasp the constructionist approach used by White and Epston. They are too keen on deconstructing one reality (mainstream American) to see that they simply replace it with another, equally culture bound view (that of academic feminism). However, the techniques are presented skillfully. A useful manual for therapists.

Grade 6-8-Eleven-year-old Khyber lives with her mother and autistic twin brothers in a low-income area in Toronto. In addition to her problems at school (she skipped two grades and doesn't fit in), she deals with her mother's decision to send her brothers to a group home, some menacing skinheads, a false accusation of vandalism that gets her expelled, and a search for her homeless friend, "X." Khyber loves her family and gladly goes beyond what one would expect of a child in order to help her mother and "X." Her friends are an odd assortment of characters, all adults. There are just too many quirks and issues to make this book believable. Some aspects of the plot are far-fetched and everything falls into place just a little too neatly at the end. On the other hand, all of the characters seem real and natural. Khyber is a likable protagonist and readers will appreciate how she copes with her issues. If they can accept some of the improbable circumstances, they will enjoy the story.

Later, skinheads rough up Khyber and X, and at the same time, some school windows are broken. When Khyber is blamed for the vandalism, she must find X to corroborate the attack and provide an alibi. It would be easy for the book to drown in bleakness, but Khyber's strong spirit and believable personality will draw readers in and make them wonder about the characters' future adventures. Look For Other Novels About Autism

Khyber, 11 chose her name because in her words the one she was given at birth was "unmentionable." At no time do readers ever learn what name she had that she abhorred. She even renames her impoverished neighborhood in Canada "Pauper's Park" which would have been a more apt description of the place.

Her penchant for renaming others is extended to a homeless woman in a neighborhood park whom she calls X. She brings her food and chats her up when she is babysitting her younger brothers.

Her twin brothers, David and Daniel, 5 have infantile or Kanner's Autism. Both boys wear diapers and are nonverbal. David was named after former Monkee Davey Jones because their single mother is an avid Monkees' fan. I thought that was adorable and funny.

Khyber is not without challenges. She and her single mother learn to dodge social workers and other professionals who insist the boys need more care; she is the brunt of school bullies who torment her for being the youngest in her grade and worst of all, taunt David and Daniel. That is the one line Khyber won't allow anyone to cross. She defends her brothers like a tigress, attacking anyone who dares criticize them. The one funny part in this book was when David ran up to Khyber when she was in a school play. When her nemesis makes cruel comments about him, Khyber delivers her line with a swear thrown in for good measure prior to stomping off stage. I thought that was funny.

Things take a down turn when their mother decides to enroll the boys in a residential program. Khyber is accused of vandalism. She runs away and a group of female Elvis Impersonators come through so she doesn't serve time in Jailhouse Rock. She learns the lesson of "don't be cruel" and it is a return to Heartbreak Hotel with a rather bizarre ending.

I thought this book was just mediocre. If I could have rated it 2.5 stars, I would have.

Very Good, But Sad

Khyber is living in poverty in a poor part of Toronto with her family. Her father abandoned them when Khyber's two autistic brothers were born. I can tell you, having an autistic child is not easy. Autistic children cannot look at you in the eye or even talk. Plus, it costs money for treatment. And you can imagine, with the shortage of money that Khyber's mother has, it would be hard to pay for treatments for two autistic children. But Khyber loves her brothers dearly and would never let anything bad happen to them. But one thing Khyber looks forward to in life is her friend X, who lives in the park. X is a very mysterious old lady who is intensely afraid of the secret police and will not tell Khyber her real name. When X suddenly dissapears, Khyber is devastated. She just had to find X. Her journey would probably be one of the scariest things that would ever happen to her. read on...

My friend decided to read looking for x, and loved it. so i decided t give it a try. i loved it! from the minutte i picked it up i was hooked! i remember when i started to finish the last few chapters i felt so sad because i would never find a better book. khyber is such a wonderfum independent, determaned girl. tammy is such a loving mother, and the twins were so interesting. all the characters were incredible and easy to relate to on different levels. the setting was quite different, and even though she did grow up in a rough place you would still want to be there just for the feeling. the story line is incredible, there are always twists and you never knew what to expect. i like how it always changes and when one thing happens the changes the whole plot.
