Solid introductory text

This is among the best introductory texts on software metrics I've read in a long time. The author carefully and meticulously leads you through the basics of measurement and metrics, including some interesting views about how measurement is an integrated activity that has three distinct phases - cognitive, semantic, and quantitative.

Key software metrics are covered, divided into simple and complex classes, and traced to quality standards and a common metrics vocabulary. This part of the book is solid and especially suited to someone who is exploring software metrics and may have been put off by the dense, overly technical approach in other books.

Like the preceding material, the chapters on designing a metrics system and data visualization are basic, but straightforward. I especially like the three chapters on data analysis that classify metrics into frequency, time and relationship domains. This is one of the clearest approaches to cutting through the complex morass of data analysis, and will put metrics into perspective instead of overwhelming. The next chapters, covering process and estimation models were adequate in my opinion. They covered the essentials. However, the chapter on defect metrics was outstanding. I liked the complete and concise coverage of this topic.

The remainder of the book ramped down and seemed to lack the detail or clarity that characterizes the preceding parts of the book. However, this material was more operational and not (in my opinion) as important as communicating the fundamentals, collection and analyses, or metrics classification that were so exceptionally well covered in this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to quickly learn the basics of software metrics.

This book is written poorly and it does not provide any information about measuring software. It simply rehashes theoretical statistics taught in 101 and that too in a difficult and hard to understand way.

Ultimate Eye-Candy for quilters

I love, love, love this book! It's been on my wish list for a long time, waiting for me to justify the price, but now that I have it I wish I'd splurged years ago, as it is worth every penny and more. I have spent hours paging through, drooling over the photos, and dreaming of what I might do with these patterns (er, just as soon as I finish up a few things in the UFO pile).

My husband, who is no more attuned to the finer points of quilting and interior decor than most guys, grabbed this from the kitchen table and sat down with it, saying, "Wow. Why don't you make something like this for our house?"

It's unlikely I will follow any of these patterns exactly, as I buy quilting books for inspiration rather than specific patterns, but based on these patterns I have begun to plan something spectacular for the front hall. Probably it will be years before it's done, at the rate I finish things (um, that UFO pile?). However, I expect to enjoy many more pleasant hours indulging in the pages of this book throughout that time. Even if I never get around to making anything from it, it will remain among my fave quilt books forever.

Everything about this book is terrific: not just the quilts themselves, but the photography, layout, discussion, and instructions are all very well done. Excellent.

In reading Leslie’s new book, The Set-Apart Woman, I’ve been deeply refreshed and inspired by the picture Leslie paints of what a truly set apart woman and Christ-centered life looks like. I’ve been corrected by God’s Spirit in areas where my own walk and life have grown lax. And yet, I’ve been spurred on by the hope of Christ in me, which is my enablement to live the way that He has called me to. Best of all, I’ve been captivated afresh by the glory of Christ’s Cross and the beauty that is wrapped up in living fully and only for Him!

Our hearts were made to crave more than this world has to offer—they were made for God Himself. This book’s message will leave you restless and uncomfortable if you’ve allowed subtle sins of the world to creep into Christ’s sacred seat in your life. If you and I are to truly be lights for Christ and lead others into His Kingdom, then we most certainly cannot blend into the likeness of this world and the flesh! Before I even got through the first chapter, already this book was challenging me to evaluate how I spent my time and if I was allowing any cultural frivolity into my behavior. This book challenged me to re-evaluate my priorities and pressed me to be even more passionate about Christ and His kingdom. I was reminded afresh that Christians are not called to be culturally savvy. Knowing the latest TV show jokes or movie quotes is not going to be what brings those in this generation to Christ. It is only by being set apart for Christ and living our lives in radical abandon to Him that the lost (or lukewarm) around us will see the joy and life that we have in Christ as something they are missing. In chapter two of The Set Apart Woman, Leslie writes these two powerful quotes:

“The world isn’t rejecting Christianity because we aren’t enough like the culture. Rather it’s because we are�too much�like it. There is nothing different about our lives, nothing that proves we have found something bigger to live for than temporary pleasure,�and certainly nothing that says we have found something worth dying for.”

“Nonbelievers will only be drawn [to Christ] when they see something real, something powerful, something far beyond what pop culture could ever hope to offer”�

As I’ve been pondering these words of wisdom, I’ve had such a renewed desire to live my life with an ever-present joy and yet set-apartness for Christ. I’ve been asking myself the question, “What really is the mark of a Christian?” and “What are the attributes that the world should be able to recognize in those that call themselves Christ’s followers?” As Leslie writes in her book, not only are we to be seen as “set apart,” but as followers of Jesus Christ, marked by joyful humility and courageous faithfulness. Because we have Jesus—the true Savior of this world and to whom is given the name of Love—in every situation we face, those around us should be able to see His life shining out of us. We should be marked by an unquenchable love for Him, a radiant joy in both the mundane tasks of everyday life and in its greatest trials, and a resilient courage to face all difficulties with absolute confidence because we reside in the unmovable rock of Jesus Christ.

A refreshing, life-giving book - like cool water for a soul that is thirsting for Jesus!

I am so, so grateful for this book. Leslie's books have played a significant part in my walk with the Lord and I knew that The Set Apart Woman would be no different. With each chapter, the Lord used her words to challenge my heart, reveal subtle compromise in my life, and bring me back to a place of ardent devotion to Him. Leslie boldly tackles challenges that women face each day (building your life around Jesus, time management, fear, emotions, legalism, media, and more) with glorious Gospel truth. This isn't a feel-good book and its "no compromise" message is sure to press you to Christ, whether you have been walking with Him for 2 years or 20 years. I am overjoyed at the renewed refining work He is doing in my heart and life through this book!

About the Author
Lawrence D. Shriberg, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus of Communicative Disorders and a principal investigator in the Communicative and Cognitive Sciences Group, Waisman Center, University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research is centered on genetic and other origins of pediatric speech sound disorders of known and unknown origin.

Raymond D. Kent, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus of Communicative Disorders at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research has been primarily in the acoustics and physiology of speech, typical and atypical development of speech in children, and neurogenic communication disorders in children and adults with an emphasis on acoustic analysis and the assessment of intelligibility.

Complicated!

While I realize that I am a beginner in the study of Phonetics, I found this book to over-complicate things. My instructor would state things much more simply, and I found this book only to be confusing. Perhaps that will change once I know more about Phonetics, but I would not recommend this book to someone who is just starting out.

The works well with the 2nd edition and has all the necessary answers and lab info. Unfortunately, it's cheaply made and will only last a few years.
