Unique Read!

PJV Quickie: There is one thing you can not deny about Rhiannon Frater’s novels – they are very unique. As a fan of the author I was excited to read DEAD SPOTS and the story did not disappoint. It was original, emotional and full of high anxiety and freaky scenes that kept me on my toes.
Review: The story opens with an idyllic family life, new couple, new baby on the way…everyone is happy, sparkly and in love. It takes a few pages for that to come crashing down. It wouldn’t be a Frater novel if everyone wasn’t all emotionally fracked up. In the first chapter the main character Mackenzie is in mourning over the death of her child and her subsequent divorce. On the drive to her mother’s house, where she was returning to lick her emotional wounds, she almost hits a deer and she irrationally decides to explore a run down diner which lands her in a dead spot. A dead spot is a place in time/space that exists between the worlds of the living and the dead. In these dead spots nightmares come to life, reality isn’t quite real and everyday is a fight for your life. And even if you are to die, you can’t actually die – you just come back to life a little less “alive” and closer to the ultimate nightmare, becoming a wraith in the world of nightmares.
Sounds rather scary right? It isn’t on the scale of King kind of scary, but it was full of overly creepy birds and clowns and anything else you can think of that is shiver worthy. So, if you are looking for an emotionally driven scare-fest, give DEAD SPOTS a read, you won’t be disappointed. I did have a few issues with the main character, I’m not kidding when I say this novel was emotionally focused. The dead spots used the characters trauma against her, so there was a lot of focus on her internal nightmares which were all based on the death of her child and the break-up of her marriage. This led to some erratic behavior by the character, which was very believable but was hard to read at times. I’m scared to know how Frater understands mourning and depression so well, because she paints the picture in her story over-the-top well. But, the focus on the emotions makes for a very sluggish read for people like me. I like happy emotions.
Recommendations: For fans of Frater, well you guys will already be reading this one like a month ago, so I don’t have to tell you to read it. But, if you do like horror, that has a lot of character focus – this is the book for you.

As Haunting As The World She Is In

As someone who has had horrible nightmares for twenty years, the idea of being trapped in a world of these night terrors is deeply unsettling and frightening. Dead Spots, by Rhiannon Frater, truly knows how create a terrifying world that lies between life and death. In this world, nightmares dominate, and it’s almost impossible to get out – just as it’s impossible to put this book down.
Mackenzie is broken and full of anxiety, trying to hold the fragments of her life together as everything falls to pieces around her. She gave birth to a stillborn son, resulting in her marriage becoming destroyed. Her now-ex husband has moved on, and Mackenzie is not finding any emotional support from her friends or family. When she ends up in the dead spot, she doesn’t believe it’s real. She is convinced she is dreaming, and is unable to fathom the terror that lurks around every corner. The horrific things she witnesses are impossible, and she rationalizes it all by deciding she is going insane. She finds a companion to help her through the dead spots, but even that is not exactly the relationship it appears to be. The world around her feeds off of her fears, and throws them back at her. She NEEDS to find a way out, and needs to find it NOW.
I was genuinely terrified for Mackenzie, and was surprised by the twists that were thrown in this story’s plotline. The imagery and the descriptions of everything were incredibly realistic, and I got goosebumps during some of the scenes. This is definitely one that I probably should not have read just before bed, as it gave me some really weird dreams!
The character development is fantastic, and all of the characters are complicated and well-rounded. Mackenzie truly grows as a person throughout the story, and I could not help but root for her. I deeply wanted her to succeed, and wanted her to get out safely. I was sad when the book ended, though was completely satisfied with the ending. It was an open ending that makes the reader think, but it is not an obnoxious cliffhanger.
I really do not want to give anything away, as I feel like going into this blind (for the most part) would be far more fun for you as readers. I cannot recommend this highly enough, and am very glad that I spent the money on Dead Spots. Rhiannon Frater is definitely blessed with the gift of horror writing, and this novel is one you do NOT want to miss!

Such an amazingly awesome book!!!

It’s not often that I get super excited and fan girl over a book, but this is one of them. I read a very early copy of this since I was lucky enough to be a beta reader. I feel like I need to disclose that. Having said that, this is a book that I need to own a physical copy of because it was absolutely amazing!! I need to read it again. (As soon as I can make myself carve out time for it, which will be soon.) The terror was so real, the emotions and feelings were pulling me every which way, and I felt so drawn into it and needed to know what was coming. This book really just hit me hard with the feels and the creep factor. It even has a super horrifying clown. It is after all set in a world between life and death where nightmares dominate and it’s almost impossible to get out.
Mackenzie was a fantastic character. She is very broken. Having given birth to a stillborn child and losing herself in grief, her life isn’t a bright and happy one. Her marriage is destroyed and she feels like her life has fallen apart. When she ends up in the dead spot, she doesn’t believe it’s real. She thinks she is dreaming. There is terror around every corner. She does find an ally who has been trapped in the dead spot for a long time. It isn’t just that simple though. She stays reluctant, not wanting to believe in this disturbing place, even after numerous gruesome and horrible things happen. Fear is a hard thing and she isn’t able to just overcome everything that has happened or keep the nightmares and horrible thoughts that consume her at bay. The dead spots feed off of fear and that is how the evil lurking gets you. It was very painful at times to go through what Mackenzie was going through. My heart ached for her. I feared for her. I wanted so badly for her to be able to push down some of her emotion so she could survive and find escape back to the real world.
Grant has been in the dead spot for a long time. I did have a hard time trusting him, but I really felt that he wanted to help Mackenzie. He’s been through a lot also. He has also seen numerous horrors in the dead spot. He has seen many destroyed by it. A fate worse than death. He was interesting and pretty complex. He was a bit creepy at times to me as well, but not like the evil beings were.
There is plenty of heart racing, spine tingling moments in this book for those of you who love that sort of thing. For those who don’t, yes, it’s creepy, but there is an amazing story to it. Underlying all the scary stuff, there is a very deep and emotional story as well. There is so much more to this than a horror story. It’s very psychological as well. In fact, the end was the most amazing, head scratching, I’m confused ending ever. Not in a bad way though. It leaves you thinking. I promise it’s not a cliffhanger or anything, it’s just one of those ending that kind of throws you, but it’s perfect for the story. I feel like I haven’t gone into this much, but it’s really something you have to read. I don’t want to give anything away. All I can say is this is one of my favorite books. I adore Rhiannon Frater’s writing and creativity and love many of her books, but this one just blew me away. I hope that many of you get this and read it’s awesomeness. I can’t express my love for this enough!
