Priceless Resource

This book is the first purchase I recommend for medical students about to start their third year, and is one of the most helpful resources for clerkships.
The book is broken down as follows:

The first 50 pages begin with an overview of what third year is like and lots of basic information that you are never really taught, but feel foolish for asking (e.g. what is the difference between a chief resident and an intern? What do the various hospital staff do?). It also has survival tips, sample H&P/SOAP notes, admit orders, oral presentation advice, and scheduling recommendations. It then has a short section of high-yield info that is useful for every clerkship (e.g. fluid replacement, overview of common hospital antibiotics and their uses, etc). This section is best to read BEFORE starting third year.

The next 400 pages are broken down into chapters by clerkship, with each being roughly 50 pages (except IMED which is around 75). Every chapter begins with a basic overview of the rotation, what your typical schedule looks like (freakishly accurate), your responsibilities on that rotation, tips specific for that rotation, sample progress notes, and my favorite: "what to keep in your pockets". This is followed by a high-yield review of the most important topics for that clerkship, sort of like a mini First Aid. This includes tons of full-color pictures and the high-yield diagrams you expect from a First Aid book. At the end of each chapter is a list of additional high-yield topics that you should study on your own. The idea is that you read each chapter before you start that rotation, but I found that it usually took me most of the first week to finish a chapter.

The last 50 pages include 2 very helpful appendices: the first one consists of descriptions & reviews of all the best references, textbooks, review books, practice tests, pocket guides, etc for each clerkship/shelf as well as for Step 2. The second index consists of hundreds of common medical abbreviations and what they stand for.

As for the 5th edition specifically, I highly recommend it over the 4th. It has been totally updated and is now full-color, better organized, all the information has been updated, some new high-yield topics have been added and low-yield ones were dropped. The review section in particular has been revamped to include iPhone/Android apps instead of PalmPilot/PocketPC apps. The book is also somehow MUCH thinner and lighter, despite being only 30 pages shorter. The outside of the book has also been covered with some kind of tough, transparent coating that is waterproof and tear-resistant... I'm surprised this isn't even advertised, as it's pretty awesome for a book that you will use all year. I think all review books should do this.

PSYCHIATRY SECTION NOT DSMV!

4/5 stars due to the fact that the psychiatry section was still DSMIV and not updated to DSMV. Other wise this book was great for a quick read through just prior to starting my next rotation. By no means is this a comprehensive review but it is satisfactory enough to get a general idea of the knowledge for each core rotation. Definitely needs to be supplemented with other sources to prepare for shelf exams and needed clinical knowledge.

A bit generic, although it is good to get an idea of what each rotation is going to consist of. There are other books for each clerkship that are far superior, but for a short and simple read, this book is sufficient.

Small book, Big value!

In an age when it has become all too commonplace for pimply faced youth with barely any life (let alone martial) experience to set themselves up as 'instructors' of an art which itself has yet to be fully rediscovered; where dozens of new schools and clubs are popping up all over the world in 'McDojo' like fashion at ever increasing and alarming rates; and where 'sportification' has sadly overshadowed the focus on legitimate defensive skills and the use of historically accurate training tools and equipment... I must admit, I had some reservations about this little book. The virtual explosion of interest in the subject of Historical Fencing has not been solely limited to the classroom, club or tournament grounds either, it has also witnessed a literary 'boom' with more books on the subject being produced in the last 15 years than in the preceding 150! With the above in mind, my primary concern (or perhaps more appropriately... question) was, 'What is the need for such a book as this?' Are we not told in the extant martial literature itself that (according to Anonymous Gloss HS 3227a or 'D�bringer' manuscript) "There is nothing new that can be devised which is not already contained in Liechtenauer's art"? What then, I could not help but wonder, is the need for yet another modern attempt to interpret already complete sources of information? Given the trends (and seeming popularity) of modern authors offering their opinions and/or interpretations of original sources overshadowing those aforesaid sources themselves, I couldn't help but wonder if the world really needed 'just another guidebook'.

The answers to my aforementioned questions and concerns, I am pleased to admit, were a welcome surprise! Before offering my thoughts on the book proper and its contents, I hope the reader will indulge a few words about the authors themselves. The book is a collaborative effort between Alex Bourdas and Keith Farrell; of the former I know virtually nothing. Mr. Farrell on the other hand, I have met. I know him and I consider him a friend (to wit, I have made every effort to be objective and unbiased in this review). Mr. Farrell is young, a point which at the outset of this review I admit gives me pause, but I can assure you that Mr. Farrell's knowledge of the subject and the original source material is impressive for a person of any age. In my many 'face to face' conversations with him, he has always conveyed a passion for, and familiarity with, the subject for which I have held him in some regard.

The book itself is a slight volume, coming in at a mere 132 pages cover to cover; however, the authors seem to have made great use of such small space and manage to at least touch upon considerable content within this tiny tome. A book of this size is certainly not going to be remembered as the definitive work on the subject, but in reading it seems apparent that this was never the authors' intent. The title itself further indicates this as the book is clearly and unabashedly a 'Study Guide'. If we take that to be the authors' stated objective, then it can be said that on that count, they surely deliver. One of the most noteworthy, and indeed impressive, things about this book is that it not only serves as a self contained guide in its own right, but it also serves as a starting guide for further study. This is made possible by the fact that the book is well footnoted and the sources which the authors drew upon in their writing can be further followed, read and studied by the readers of this book. I will be the first to admit that there are elements contained within this volume with which I agree, and others with which I do not. The fact that the sources of the authors' information and research are so well listed and made openly available makes it easy to see 'where they might have been coming from' on a particular issue, and/or to follow up on points that interest the reader further or to gain greater insights into content the reader might not agree with or understand. I truly commend the authors and the book for being so well documented, footnoted and forthcoming with regard to same.

While I believe this book has the potential to confuse some readers (although again, it does make continuation of study easy for the enthusiastic reader to find out more), I feel as though the authors have made a sincere and valiant effort in attempting to explain the differences between those things which might confuse a neophyte of the subject. In fact, it is the simplistic yet obviously knowledgeable way in which the authors present the material where I think this book really shines. For persons new to the subject, or those not yet well versed in the taxonomical German nomenclature, this (albeit small) volume presents a well rounded catalog of basic concepts, terms and ideas which are refreshing to see presented in such a handy, portable guidebook. Experienced students and practitioners of the craft may find themselves lamenting that such a compact yet comprehensive guidebook was not available years ago.

In short, this book is not without its flaws, but is an impressive and noble inaugural effort from two authors whose dedicated research and study of the themes presented are in evidence throughout. For the experienced scholar of Historical Fencing studies, you will likely find nothing new or groundbreaking here, and yet this book would still make a welcome addition to your library as a quick reference guide, etc. (I have found myself drawing upon it for reference several times myself!). For those who are new to the subject of Medi�val and/or Renaissance Martial Arts (and particularly the German corpus), provided the reader is judicious and takes care to notice the authors' discussion of the differences between sport, real martial art, etc. this book certainly has the potential to be a great starting point and one that will likely eventually become a treasured volume to which you might find yourself referring back to for years to come!

A welcomed study guide for the budding fencer or experienced instructor!

Keith Farrell and Alex Bourdas provide an exceptional and comprehensive study guide for Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) enthusiasts studying longsword in the German tradition of Kunst des Fechtens (Art of Fighting), stemming from the teachings of Johannes Liechtenauer. The book covers longsword principles in distinct detail, incorporates relevant translated material from various sources to compliment the text, and includes useful solo drills and exercises. Unfortunately, the authors only provided a very limited number of hand-drawn illustrations that just depict snap shots of various positions, not sequences of entire plays, and all are missing captions (key terms in German and English would have been ideal).

I gave the rating of four stars because the print quality of the book could be a little better given the price and for the lack of figures and captions. This book is a study guide and probably suited better for those already slightly familiar with German longsword basics; however, comprehensive and compact, this study guide is an invaluable reference for any Kunst des Fechtens enthusiast and one that should be proudly carried with your HEMA gear!

Lastly, although Amazon does not carry this title, it is available through Purpleheart Armoury and I highly recommend buying from them.

An excellent reference book!

This book contains a distilled overview of the German longsword across several sources and masters. It is not a detailed "how to" manual and does not aim to be. Instead, it is a well referenced study guide listing different principles of the art, from guards and strikes to concepts like the 'vor' and 'nach', comparing their descriptions between sources and offering insight into their development over time. Both authors know the subject matter well and the text is clear as well as descriptive. As a long-time practitioner of historical european martial arts I use the book as a reference when I need a high level picture of a subject I am studying or teaching, or as a guide when I want to research a specific topic by following the gathered links. A lovely and handy book.

Ghost Busters Rock

I have enjoyed Mavis's books before and always look for new work from her. I was not disapointed with, "Whispering Pines". I was drawn into the world of this novel and could not wait to finish the story. It was fun trying to guess the details and the outcome. I am a fan of "Ghost Hunters", and "Ghost Hunters International" so if you like those and lesbian stories you will probably like this one. All in all a great read and I will keep this book to reread again. If you don't like bloody details, there is a pretty gory murder, but it was needed for the story.

Mavis Applewater brings to light great characters and incredibly creative plots. Her writing style is quite enjoyable as well. That holds true for her previous publications and `Whispering Pines' too.

Here she introduces skeptic Faith Charles and paranormal investigator Dr. Shawn Williams (the Xena and Gabby characters, respectively). The book opens with these two women staying overnight in the Whispering Pines mansion. They experience such powerful entities at the house that Faith can no longer be considered a skeptic and Shawn refuses to ever set foot on the property again. It seems the mansion is haunted by Captain Horatio Stratton, his wife Anna and his sister (Anna's lover) Catherine. Everyone believes the Captain murdered his wife and sister because he caught them having an affair. In some ways, Anna's `life' was improved by this because he was a terrible mentally abusive husband who treated her like nothing more than a piece of property. After their stay at the house, Faith and Shawn have a short but powerful relationship - that is, until Faith decides to go report from a war zone. This single decision tears them apart. A few years later, they meet again and Faith tries to win Shawn's love once again. Shawn wants Faith, but is scared to go down that road again. Eventually, circumstances bring the couple back to Whispering Pines where they finish what they started by bringing Anna and Catherine peace.

The trial of trying to rebuild their relationship is the central vein of the story. The ghosts and other paranormal stuff just provide the stage. Funny in spots, scary in others, this one is surely to be enjoyed by all.

Celti Knotwork Explained?

Acknowledging the complexities of this book's approach to Celtic Knotwork, Iain Bain, George Bain's son, has published a much more approachable introduction in his Celtic Knotwork, Constable, London 1986. It was reprinted last in 1992 but is unfortunately out of print. Used copies are available and I would stongly recommend Iain Bain's book as a most helpful place to begin. The senior Bain's book is however an informative reference, a far cry above the usual "picture book for colouring" approach.

Could the killer have been Lady Exner's nephew and heir-apparent, stammering Prof. Philip Whitcomb, or his improbably sharp-eyed fianc‚e, Val Twyler--or one of the stable of stock villains trying to rob or kill Lady Exner aboard the Queen Guinivere? Fortunately, a stable of equally familiar-looking shipmates (including Regan's universally adored suspense novelist mom, obviously modeled on first-novelist Clark's own famous mother) is on hand to help Regan to a revelation that's a lot less surprising than you might expect. Hello Regan Reilly, A Wonderful Beginning

I have been reading Carol Higgins Clark for several years, but never had the opportunity to read her first Regan Reilly book. Now I have and I loved it. I have been addicted to Carol's books ever since the first read, and this one did not dissapoint.
Regan goes to her 10 year reunion in Oxford with her best friend. She discovers that her roommate who had dissapeared 10 years earlier was murdered and her body only recently found. After attending a tea at the home of an elderly aunt of one of the professors who had befriended the girls in school, Regan is pursuaded to take a sea voyage with the aunt. Also on the ship are Regan's parents (an author and a funeral parlor owner), some kooky passengers, a jewel thief, and a murderer.
The characters are believable, the plot is tricky and humorus, and the intrigue is stimulating. Carol never dissapoints and she is no amature even in this first book.
I appreciate a book that moves along at a nice pace, has no drag and does not leave loose ends.Thank you, Carol.

Excellent explaination of the modern American worldview

SUCH a great introduction to the prevailing worldview of America today. Bush does a fine job of demonstrating why testing all truth by the scientific method is not a good idea. Modern day Americans would reject historical truth if they cannot test it scientifically. They reject logic when the logic isn't able to be tested with the scientific method. And this is ridiculous. The Advancement is a great book - and not JUST for this reason. Do yourself a favor and check it out. It's a very easy read for any intellectual, but the points, though simple to understand, are quite valid.
