As always, Lovelace is concerned with how West Indian men and women struggle to find their individual identities in the face of dehumanizing living conditions, and how they resist cultural assimilation. For two days a year, the festival-parade of Carnival allows struggling Trinidadians to forget their poverty and embrace the frenzy and glory that masquerade provides. For the hilltop shack communities that dot the outskirts of Port-of-Spain, Carnival takes on mythic proportions. The respect that hustler Aldrick gains for his portrayal of an intricately scaled dragon carries him through the year. But the old order is fading: aging Carnival queen Cleothilde is forced to give way to beautiful, free-spirited Sylvia; drummer Fisheye fights to preserve his pride; and corporate sponsors rush to profit from Carnival and do away with its old customs of warriorhood between rival bands in favor of a more tourist-friendly version of the festivities. Conflicts arise when whose who resist control by the corporations alienate neighbors by challenging the inevitable commercialization of Carnival. Kaleidoscopically colorful characters and a faithful ear help make this quest for personhood one of Lovelace's best works.

The queen senses a rival, and Aldrick, famous for his avoidance of work and marriage, feels love coming on. Conflict also drives Fisheye, a warrior without a cause whose restlessness infects his fellow drummers to the point that their steel bands become veritable street gangs, and Pariag, the only Indian on the Hill and the most ambitious and innocent of the lot. Caribbean writer Lovelace, whose Salt won the 1997 Commonwealth Writer's Prize, returns with a story (first published in England in 1979) that offers a defining and luminously sensitive portrait of postcolonial island life. The island in question is recently independent Trinidad, but it could be any Caribbean island settled by European planters, African slaves, and indentured East Indians. Carnival time is at hand, and the inhabitants of the Hill, former slaves, who ``survive here, holding their poverty as a possession,'' are getting ready for this Mardi Graslike celebration: Steel bands are practicing, calypso singers and writers--like the diffident Philo--are creating new songs, and Aldrick Prospect, as usual, is working on his dragon costume. Aldrick, who, like most of the men, is unemployed, comes alive at Carnival, where it's his mission to do the Dragon dance, a dance that expresses all the people's frustrations and memories of their warrior past, and affirms their power--power that, if provoked, could burn down the city. But this year Aldrick, who's spurned the advances of young Sylvia, finds himself brooding. Change is in the air--those steel bands are acquiring commercial sponsors, the old fighting spirit of the people is changing to passive acceptance, and Aldrick's friends are drifting away and making new lives. After Carnival, Aldrick, feeling like ``the last symbol of rebellion,'' continues to brood, especially when he sees Sylvia take up with Guy, a notorious womanizer. He befriends Fisheye, an angry radical, and joins a futile rebellion against the government. Aldrick is jailed but, unlike the others, doesn't accept defeat, and once released--still depressed--he returns to the Hill. Finally, a quiet epiphany and a promise of Sylvia's affection present him with hope and reason enough to give up the impotent protest of the Dragon's dance. A prescient novel of protest and community

Earl Lovelace's The Dragon Can't Dance, set in Trinidad, positions the complex ritual of Carnival in a socio-political context. Unpacking Carnival is synonymous with examining the Caribbean self, as Aldrick journeys from an anonymous masquerade dragon to an authentic self.

Lovelace explores characters from various backgrounds, exploring the transformation each undergoes as consumerism and corporate influence creep into Carnival. From the 'bad John,' Fisheye, to the rising calypso star Philo, each character is transformed and contributes to the transformation of Aldrick.

At the novel's center is the romance between Aldrick and Sylvia. Across the years and Carnivals, the two do a dance of self-discovery which is not overblown or over dramatic. Their love story is, instead, understated and believable, and represents a solid foundation to a novel with perfect prose and pacing.

A Spellbinding and Magnificent Piece of Art

Earl Lovelace's novel leaves me spellbound and overwhelmed with how possibly to express the brilliance and beauty of the book. This is a magnificent and extraordinary piece of art with the hypnotic lyricism of its prose, the intricacy of its story, and the depth to which Lovelace investigates the struggles of an entire community. Only the great Naguib Mahfouz comes to mind as having a similar ability as Lovelace in probing the psychological and emotional depths of his characters.

The story takes places in the poverty-stricken shantytown of Cavalry Hill in Trinidad. The plot focuses around the festival of Carnival each year. In this impoverished setting and on the transcendent occasion of the yearly Carnival celebration, Lovelace guides us into the lives of a range of characters that burst off the page in all their pain and joy, their failures and triumphs, their shame and redemption. We meet Cleothilda, the hostile shop owner; Sylvia, the gorgeous maiden; Fisheye, the wayward combatant; Philo, the calypsonian dreamer; Pariag, the minority outcast; and Aldrick, the dragon masquerader. Each of them carries a lifelong weight of both wounds and dreams.

In particular, Aldrick is the focal figure. He is the one who most symbolically undergoes a spiritual transformation each year when he dons his dragon costume. When he becomes the dragon, he asserts both his humanity and his dangerousness while also reminding himself of his past and his need to survive. Everyone attempts to escape their harsh reality by entering the realm of their masquerade during Carnival. The festival temporarily transports them into their dreams and out of the dismal situation of their lives. They are each striving to reach a feeling of hope. After the yearly gala ends, however, problems arise when they must return to their daily hardships. Lovelace charts these phases and transitions with great compassion and empathy. He scrutinizes the dynamics of power, race, and class distinctions. He traces the emotions, motives, and instincts that drive his characters to survive, and he also examines what pushes them beyond their threshold of tolerance and patience to a condition where they snap.

The Dragon Can't Dance is the type of unforgettable narrative that stays with you and percolates your thoughts. It affirms the power of literature to explore the essence of truth and to address the meaning of humanity. Lovelace is a master at showing us how within a destitute community, the yearning to live, grow, and have hope is no different for people anywhere in the world, regardless of their station in life.

Really covers all the basic-advanced topics going on in modern chemical oceanography. It can be a tough read at points, but is fairly straight forward overall. I may have failed by chemical oceanography exam, but the book is still nice.

Content marketing is the use of content—articles, photos, infographics, video—to tell stories and provide information, all with the goal of building trust with an audience of potential or existing customers. The theory behind it is simple: help your customers answer questions, solve problems or shop smarter for your products and they'll reward you with their business and even their loyalty. It's not a new concept—as Didner points out, Jell-O began providing recipes to shoppers back in 1904—but it has spread to all sorts of businesses as digital channels like social media have exploded and traditional advertising has waned in effectiveness. You can see content marketing today in all sorts of forms—from tweets and blogs to apps to live events that generate videos and multimedia.

In Global Content Marketing, Didner does a masterful job of demystifying an important topic that is all too often presented as a jargon-laden, wishy-washy dark art. Drawing on her previous role leading global content strategy at Intel, Didner provides readers a framework (the 4 P's) to implement across organizations large and small. But what really sets this book apart is its emphasis on global strategy. Pam Didner's Global Content Marketing makes it easy to reexamine your business and rethink your content marketing priorities.

For example, even though I'm obviously aware of who my clients are, after reading the first few chapters of Global Content Marketing, it suddenly struck me that the majority of book coaching income during the past few years had originated from Asia and Australia. The message, of course, is that we are all global content marketing, and so are our competitors! So, it behooves us to improve our global marketing abilities.

The core of Global Content Marketing's strength is Pam's broad understanding of content marketing combined with her ability to relate it to a global setting. Because she writes as if she were talking to you, Global Content Marketing is an easy-to-read book about a very complex topic.

Pam pulls it off, however, by building in hooks that readers of all experience levels and occupational settings (corporate, managerial, agency, entrepreneurial) can relate to. She also seamlessly integrates comments and examples from her A-list content marketing peers, which adds another layer of immediacy and storytelling. Finally, she displays a deep understanding of information architecture tools by using frequent subheads, pull-quotes, lists, and tables. There are also numerous case studies that illustrate key chapters.

In many ways, this is a "two-for-one" book. In addition to learning how to adapt their content marketing to an increasingly global stage--using the latest emerging technologies--readers are also likely to gain a better understanding of content marketing best practices and current strategies.

This is the book I wish I'd had 5 years sooner!

Creating effective content strategies for any business is a complex undertaking. But developing a blueprint that works for global companies is on a whole different level. And in a global economy, very few of us can ignore the need not just to translate for different audiences, but to tailor our content strategies for different personas, needs, channels and content preferences.

This is the first book I’ve read that takes on the unique challenges companies face when marketing in multiple geographies, with diverse market needs and cultural norms. Having worked on content strategies for multiple enterprise B2B clients with regional and global geographical considerations, I really appreciate the detailed, strategic guidance Pam Didner provides. Seems good...but not for me.

This is the first opening book I ever read, and I must say that the lists of variations are overwhelming. Every so often the author includes 'ideas' behind a certain position, but I had trouble referring back to them in the jungle of variation lists. This book seems geared toward the more experienced (1800+) player than to someone looking to amass an opening repretoire. Perhaps I chose the wrong opening to begin with? Hope this helps.

Can't rank it two and a half stars, so..............

I spent twelve and a half years in prison, but I have to agree with the correction professionals who have commented previously. The book is interesting in terms of describing what life behind the walls is like, but at some point, you have to take some responsibility for what you have done and where you are at, and Jack never seems to do that.

I read this book during my first year of incarceration and was truly stunned. Heck, I even put him up on a dais. Jack is the MAN! Jack is the MAN! Then, as the years passed (whilst staring at the tops of trees over the prison walls), my perspective moved to something less black and white.

My birth parents abandoned me. I hated the peeps that adopted me. I was smoking coke. I was doing steroids. I hit DYS and schools kicked me out. I was hanging out with the wrong people.

But it wasn't their fault.

I made the decisions that ended me up in prison for the best years of my life (23 to 36 - woot, where did my hairline go??). I decided to smoke base and shoot roids and rebel against that o sooooo terrible system. I made the decision to stick guns in peoples faces and rob them.

Ya dig your grave and, durn it, you have to eventually lie in it.

Prison wasn't nice. I saw men OD, hang themselves, and die right in front of me from multiple knife wounds. I was in riots and brutal fights. I witnessed it all, and it definitely left a whole lot of scars.

But it was me that brought me there. Not the drugs. Not the social inequality. Just my own decisions.

Actions and consequences, Jack, actions and consequences.

And please don't read his second book - it's pathetic.

A good book for describing the day to day life of prison and the attitudes that develop from it (I still don't like cops and have to sit at the far end of the restaurant so no one is behind me). But the whole "It's not my fault - it's the system" theme runs thin rather quickly.

Recommend A Day in the Life (I lived three houses down from Alex Solz prior to the feds catching up with me) or The Hothouse over this.

Finally (and another example of the carry over prison scarring issues), I have heard that Jack turned informant after his return to the Big House (before hanging himself).

Babbling........ shutting up now - just read it.

Abbott is best observed from a distance

While it must be said that "In the Belly of the Beast" has a certain seductive quality, for its reputation as "prison literature," and its colorful cast of supporters, the book is ultimately more important for simply existing rather than being a work of any literary stature.
This obviously gave the career prisoner a voice that had never before been heard in the popular arena. His life experience provides the book's primary thesis: Prison is a culture that breeds career criminals. Abbott is reasonably smart, and his descriptions of prison life are coherent and literate, although they're buried in a morass of ideological recrimination.
When considered purely in the abstract, his analogy between prison culture and the proletariat isn't entirely ridiculous. However, when he claims that convicts are the best and the brightest of human culture, and likens his fate to a class struggle, his arguments become overbearing. By the conclusion of the book, we learn more about his grasp of Marxism than about prison culture, and even less about Abbott himself. At some point, we can see that Abbott has even thought of himself as a political prisoner.
"In the Belly of the Beast" is best experienced by examining what other people say about it, and not by actually reading it. It's more fun to read Norman Mailer's beatification of Abbott than it is to read Abbott himself. In this case, intellectual distance makes the book easier to tolerate.
