The title says it all.

This is not for the faint of heart. It is for those who have experienced real sexual abuse - particularly adults who experienced the abuse in childhood. The early chapters are hard work and best completed in a support group with a counselor. However, even if you work through this book alone, the support and knowledge shared by the author can radically change your life for the better. Written with warmth and honesty, this book can be an eye-opener for spouses as well. I pray to God that you will never experience sexual abuse, but if you have, this book is an investment worth making in yourself.

much like The Wounded Heart

I have not yet finished this book by Dr Allender but wanted to rate the reading to this point...I'm quite sure the rest of the book will be just as well done, much like The Wounded Heart. When reading Dr Allender's books on sexual trauma I feel known and understood as a victim of sexual abuse...that is so meaningful and powerful on every level. Dr Allender helps the sexual trauma survivor do the transforming work toward freedom in Christ. I cannot tell you enough how incredibly grateful I am for his work in this arena! His work gives a path to healing and hope to victims/survivors without simplifying or platitudes which is appropriate for this incredibly complex subject. Going into our stories is hard work but worth every effort. I keep experiencing "A-ha" moments and deep gratitude in the midst of profound pain and victory as I explore my story and work the healing process. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I think I like the workbook better than the textbook

This book completely changed the way I see my own story. The workbook itself stands alone quite well and expands the final chapters of the textbook. In fact, I think I like the workbook better than the textbook. It is thoroughly practical and I am taking it slowly, discussing some of the questions with my wife. Most importantly, this workbook is so biblical and gospel-centered that the Lord has indeed used it to bring about some wonderful opportunities for me to grow in my own sanctification. I can see more clearly now how much of my behavior and patterns of reenactment are related to my past sexual abuse. The author is honest, confronting my own sin and speaking the truth in love. This book has particularly exposed my sins of self-hatred and other-centered contempt, which I was so utterly blind to. However, he not only helps me see my sins but also teaches me how to deal with them with kindness, love, faith, and hope for change through Christ. It has a beautiful balance of showing the depravity and the dignity of life itself.
