From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1–Mary and Clare spend their days at preschool together. They hug when they meet, hold hands while going out to the playground, and sit next to one another at storytime. All goes smoothly until the day of Mary's birthday, when she gets special privileges and much attention from the teacher and other students. Clare grows resentful and starts an argument, which ends with both girls angrily yelling, YOU ARE NOT MY FRIEND! They each play with other children and have time to cool off. When naptime is over, Clare presents her friend with a hand-drawn picture and wishes her a Happy birthday. Mary graciously accepts the gift, an unspoken apology, and the two are friends once again. No adult guides them toward reconciliation; these children simply figure out for themselves what is important. Various printmaking techniques are used in the artwork to create bold, flat shapes, with enough white space to allow the colors to pop off the pages. The illustrations, in a warm palette, give a retro feel to the story but the multicultural classroom takes the tale to the present. This is a story of true friendship that is stronger than envy or jealousy.–Maryann H. Owen, Racine Public Library, WI

From Booklist
*Starred Review* PreS-K. In spot-on words and crisp, gaily patterned prints, the illustrator of the Caldecott Honor Book Ella Sarah Gets Dressed (2004) captures the unselfconscious affection and quicksilver shifts in mood that characterize preschool friendships. Classmates Clare and Mary hug hello, sit together at storytime, and hold hands when they go outside to play. But when Mary's birthday merits queen-for-a-day treatment, Clare vents her jealousy by informing her pink-clad friend that "yellow is prettier." The argument explodes in double-page spreads that zoom close to the girls' furious profiles, culminating in a bitter outburst: "YOU ARE NOT MY FRIEND!" After time apart, a nap, and a birthday card lovingly crayoned in both girls' favorite colors, the children reestablish their "best best BEST" bond. Like Molly Bang's When Sophie Gets Angry--Really, Really Angry (1999), this shows children working through conflict without adult intervention, and the message is further buoyed by a cozy classroom backdrop that will prompt chatter about kids' own preschool routines. A perfect choice for supporting the socialization aims of the earliest years of school, when instincts about generosity, empathy, and loyalty begin to balance the egocentric impulses of babyhood. Good Book about Friendship and Envy

This is a great book for young preschoolers who are just learning to understand their feelings. It is very simple and straightforward and shows children that everyone feels jealous sometimes but a friend is a precious commodity.

Read it to your preschool child.
By Bonnie Ferrante
This is a perfect book for preschool and kindergarten children. Clare and Mary are best friends. They do everything together and love each other’s company. But, on Mary’s birthday she gets to be first in line, wear a golden birthday crown, and have a special cupcake. In a jealous moment, Clare is unkind to Mary and a fight ensues. The girls go their separate ways. After a while, Clare draws a birthday card for Mary and their friendship is repaired. When their parents come to take them home, the girls wave to each other and call, “See you tomorrow!”

The storyline is simple and relevant to children who attend day care or kindergarten and are venturing into a social world beyond their family. Each page has only a few words and the pictures are easy to understand.

Every child has squabbles with her best friend. This book will enable parents to discuss jealousy and hurtful remarks with their young child. It is important for children to understand that fights don’t have to be forever and there are ways you can repair a relationship.

The pictures are bright and simple collages with detailed patterns stamped on items of clothing with paint. With the simplest of lines and shapes, Chodos-Irvine portrays the girls’ happiness, anger, resentment, and acceptance.

It is easy to see why this charming little book is a Caldecott Honor Winner. Highly recommended.

Beautiful Brain: The Drawings of Santiago Ramon y Cajal, by Larry W. Swanson, Eric Newman, Alfonso Araque, Janet M. Dubinsky

At the crossroads of art and science, Beautiful Brain presents Nobel Laureate Santiago Ramn y Cajal’s contributions to neuroscience through his groundbreaking artistic brain imagery.

Santiago Ramn y Cajal (1852–1934) was the father of modern neuroscience and an exceptional artist. He devoted his life to the anatomy of the brain, the body’s most complex and mysterious organ. His superhuman feats of visualization, based on fanatically precise techniques and countless hours at the microscope, resulted in some of the most remarkable illustrations in the history of science. Beautiful Brain presents a selection of his exquisite drawings of brain cells, brain regions, and neural circuits with accessible descriptive commentary.

These drawings are explored from multiple perspectives: Larry W. Swanson describes Cajal’s contributions to neuroscience; Lyndel King and Eric Himmel explore his artistic roots and achievement; Eric A. Newman provides commentary on the drawings; and Janet M. Dubinsky describes contemporary neuroscience imaging techniques. This book is the companion to a traveling exhibition opening at the Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis in February 2017, marking the first time that many of these works, which are housed at the Instituto Cajal in Madrid, have been seen outside of Spain.

Beautiful Brain showcases Cajal’s contributions to neuroscience, explores his artistic roots and achievement, and looks at his work in relation to contemporary neuroscience imaging, appealing to general readers and professionals alike.

Beautiful and Informative
By Amy
Like Cajal's drawings, this book provides a balance between beautiful images and information. The images, many of which have not been previously shown or reproduced, are truly the work of a master artist and scientist. The essays accompanying the book provide context for the scope of Cajal's work and allow the readers a glimpse into the personal life of Santiago Roman y Cajal.

And the Walls Came Tumbling Down: An Autobiography, by Ralph David Abernathy

Originally published in 1989, this beautifully written autobiography of the Rev. Dr. Ralph David Abernathy—Martin Luther King Jr.'s partner and eventual successor—not only tells his own story but also expounds on the leaders he knew intimately, including King, Jesse Jackson, Andrew Young, and Lyndon Johnson, among others. Revealing the planning that went into major protests and the negotiations that brought them to a close, Abernathy chronicles a movement, recalling the bitter defeats they faced, the misery and deaths they suffered. Amidst these struggles, though, he celebrates the victories that integrated communities, gave economic and political power to the disenfranchised, and brought hope to people who had not dreamed of it. Throughout, Abernathy's close relationship with King is central to the story—and to the civil rights movement. In 1956, when Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus, it was Abernathy who enlisted King to join the protest. Together, they led the landmark bus boycott for 381 days, during which Abernathy’s house was bombed and his church dynamited. From there, the two helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and they were jailed together more than 40 times. Their protests and marches took them all over the South—Selma, Albany, Birmingham—and to Washington and Chicago as well. An unsung hero of his era, Abernathy's inspiring memoir ultimately shows how their victories, and even their setbacks, led to social and legislative changes across the entire country.

From Publishers Weekly
Abernathy's autobiographical account of the birth and struggles of the civil rights movement is inspirational and deeply moving. With Martin Luther King Jr., his closest colleague, he helped organize the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and the 1965 march in Selma, Ala.; he and King went north to Chicago in 1966, where they battled Mayor Richard Daley and found racism as endemic and deep-rooted as in the South. He cradled King in his arms when the latter was assassinated in Memphis. Son of a stern, righth- ous farmer father, Abernathy became a Baptist pastor after fighting in WW II with a segregated platoon. In a voice at once down-to-earth and eloquent, he recounts protests, jailings and bombings in Birmingham, St. Augustine, Washington, Charleston and elsewhere. He defends his support of Reagan's 1980 presidential bid, as well as his support, in the next two elections, for Jesse Jackson. Reading this engrossing, powerful memoir-as-history will force white Americans to confront the legacy of racism. Abernathy conveys a sense of how the civil rights movement discovered its tactics and direction in response to individual situations. Photos.

From Library Journal
One opens the autobiography of Martin Luther King's closest associate and friend with excitement. Unfortunately, Abernathy makes slight contribution to what we know already about Montgomery, Selma, and the several other great episodes of the civil rights era upon which he focuses, and he entirely omits others, such as the 1963 March on Washington. Nor does he attempt to lure readers with intimate disclosures. Regarding political rivalry and sexual pastimes among movement leaders he is, on the whole, reticent. He is more interesting in the account of his 1980 endorsement (now regretted) of Ronald Reagan. When King chose Abernathy as his successor, he lacked power to transfer the stature he had won in civil-rights leadership, and Abernathy has always suffered in comparison. This autobiography, awkwardly and incompletely told, will not adjust his historical standing. Necessary only for collections in civil rights.

truth without varnish
By Amazon Customer
Ralph Abernathy wrote his life's story warts and all. He also spoke honestly about his dear friend, Doc and his private life. Doc was Martin Luther King Jr. and a lot of people reacted almost violently to the revelations in the book. Abernathy was called a traitor, a Judas and an Uncle Tom. He was also accused of being senile or insane with jealousy of Dr. King's memory. Sadly, with all the name calling people forgot or ignored the fact that it's a good autobiography and a valuable edition to the historical record of the Civil Rights movement.

Not what you've been led to believe
By Andre M.
When this first came out around 1990, stupid rumors abounded that Dr.King's right-hand-man and surrogate brother had written a sleazy text about Dr. King's sex life. This bunch of hogwash and the cruel responses by people who beleived the hype drove Dr. Abernathy to his grave! This is actually a very good book filled with interesting anecdotes about Dr. Abernathy's years as a soldier in the Civil Rights movement. However, he pulls no punches regarding the infighting that destroyed what was left of the movement after Dr. King's death. This is an important historical memoir by one who was certainly there.

A well written, truthful biography of a powerful Movement..
By Superwoman AJ
I'm so glad I read this book, but am sorry it took me more than a decade to learn that Dr. Abernathy hadn't "sold out" Martin Luther King as was reported in the media when this book was first published. Unfortunately, Dr. Abernathy died before he knew all of black America hadn't turned on him. He told a truthful story of a movement led by strong, yet very "human" men and women. None of us are without our weaknesses, but those weaknesses do not define the total of who we are. Just as Dr. Abernathy's depiction of the weaknesses in himself and in Dr. King don't define the whole tone of this book. I'm glad I read it, and I shared it with my mother who also read it from cover to cover with relish. I appreciate the MLK's and the Ralph David Abernathy's who made such a sacrifice so I could have the rights of every other human being living in the United States.

Wonderful resource for readers of Lewis
By Amazon Customer
Having experienced a weekend retreat on C.S. Lewis given by Will Vaus, I was somewhat hesitant to read this book because I was unsure that the pages could come close to the expereince and insight gained by personal interaction with the author. I was pleasantly surprised and would recommend this book to anyone who has experienced the works of C.S. lewis. It could be argued that going to the original sources by Lewis is the only way to experience his works; however, not having the time to read all of his works immediately, Will gives the reader a wonderful look inside the mind and thoughts of the premier Christian writer of the 20th century. What a treasure and wonderful resource whether reading the Chronicles with your children or doing scholarly research into the thoughts and theology of C.S. Lewis. The way that Will is able to take scholarly material and present it in an engaging way to readers at all levels is very beneficial.

I can recommend this book without reservation.

Who's the audience?
By Jeffrey A. Thompson
I have read Lewis for years and enjoyed him immensely. When I started reading this book, I kept asking myself, "Who is the audience?" People well read in Lewis will know most of the material presented. People who are curious about Lewis should just read Lewis. To me this book is just a good reference work for some limited applications.

The author does present the material in a very accessible form. He writes in a very clear and friendly manner. He has short chapters on different topics like marriage, sex, salvation, God, and the incarnation. You can tell the author's real affection for Lewis's writings. The real advantage of this book is that the author references materials that the average fan of Lewis does not read: the letters, sermons and talks. Another benefit of this book is that the author shows how Lewis changed his theology over his life time.

The main problem with the book is, using Lewisian terms, the book spends too much time "looking at," instead of "looking alongside." The book feels too much like a research paper and does not encourage the reader to enjoy the magic of Lewis for themselves.

I have a website on C. S. Lewis and I get questions all the time about these topics. Frankly, this book is much better than my website and I will probably quote from it in my FAQ section. If you have questions about what Lewis believed on certain theological topics, this book will be a very good guide. However, reading Lewis is the very best method and the most fun way to find out what Lewis thought.

A Great Resource
By L. M. Beamer
I've dabbled with reading C.S. Lewis's works for years, and while they intrigue me, I've often found the content intellecutally intimidating. What a treat "Mere Theology" has been for me! Breaking down Lewis's thoughts by topic, it's been a great resource, giving me invaluable insights that will undoubtedly benefit me when I return to Lewis's original works. The author has done an excellent job of presenting the material in an organized, reader-friendly and meaningful fashion.
