Excellent book for people who want to learn biomathematics

This is a very nice book for who has some previous knowledge about college math and wants to apply it to modeling some biological problems. Actually, biomath has become more and more popular in the recent years and this book provides a clear and thorough review for some most interesting topics out there. The book serves well as both textbook and reference book. It is very well written, organized, full of examples and the proofs were given in details whenever necessary. Nothing comes out in a sudden and this is very important for a math book. One feature I particularly like is at the beginning of each chapter, some brief review involving the key math technique is given, which saves a lot of time for people like me who almost completely forgot how to solve ODE. BTW, some of the exercises after each chapter are quite challenging but interesting too. Overall, it is a great book and I would recommend it to anyone who want to gain an overall view of biomathematics.

Not the best book around

I have used this book (along with my own notes) to teach second year university students, and every time the students complain that the book is inaccessible. Only after they've gone through the course they find it usable in the sense that they can go back and look things up. My personal feeling about the book is that it doesn't know which leg to stand on. In some aspects it is quite rigorous, but not in an inviting way, whereas in other places it attempts to speak to the intuition but comes up short. I think a cross between this book and the book by Strogatz would be a great compromise.

Concise and detailed introduction to mathematical biology

This book is concise yet includes all the major approaches to studying mathematical biology. It has plenty of exercises and examples for honing the particular skills needed to study different mathematical model of biological systems. I used it as a reference to help write my thesis.

Liam Ryan has become one of the greatest cancer survivors of all time. Diagnosed with one of the worst cases of Head & Neck cancer ever seen he simply had no chance. His initial consultant told him he was the second worse case he had ever seen. The worst case was dead in a month. Very few hospitals in the world, he told him, could offer any hope to a case like his. He was given just weeks to live. Eventually, impressed by his fighting spirit, Professor Simon Rogers and his team in Liverpool, offered Liam a chance, without believing he would make it. To give him something to fight for, they told him he had a 5% chance. The problem with serious Head & Neck cancer is invariably the treatment required will put you in the grave before the cancer gets the chance to. If Liam was still alive after surgery he was likely to be without his sight, his speech, his hearing, his mobility, his brain function or any combination of all 5. But none of that mattered then. He just wanted to be alive. If he was alive he was winning, and cancer was losing. He underwent a life threatening 12 hour operation. It was followed by 7 weeks of radical chemo-radiotherapy but in between he got meningitis and a deep vein thrombosis. Both of these nearly killed him by themselves. By the end of 2002 he simply had no business still being alive, but somehow, he was. 10 years later his amazing survival has been outdone by his even more incredible recovery. In 2012 Liam ran his first marathon, post-cancer. Now he has written down his remarkable story for the first time. This book will take you through his life to the point of cancer and then beyond. One man and his battle with this incredible disease and how he channeled everything he had into fighting to the end. This is an inspirational story for everyone. It is a story of great hope and encouragement. Liam Ryan has become the living proof that no matter how much the odds are stacked against you, they can always be overturned.

Life one million ... a required read for all!

This book is a testament to the power of humanity, to what God gave us, to LIFE .. it is a story of life, lives changed by the knowledge that has come from facing death head on, that life is itself important. Liam is not a hero (I say this as someone who knows him), he is not a miracle maker or possessor of anything hugely outstanding, he is someone who through his own life has embraced the power of the life we have been given and used that to his and others benefit. Not every cancer story ends this way, nor does that of everyone with Liam's convictions, but this story reminds you what we are here for, whether you believe in God or anything else spiritual or not. We are here for ourselves, our familiies, each other and to experience life. The humour and honesty in the writing means you will finish it quickly and feel good about yourself in ways you may not have done before.

Every home or family should have a copy ... I keep mine opposite the smallest room in the house on a bookshelf where visitors can graze for something to read, and they invariably do and ask to take it away with them!

Be inspired and reminded about all you were made for ... and help others too, as the money for sales goes to charity.

I love this book and the author

I love this book and the author. The inspiration he has given me has been incredible. His book not only tells his story, but also gives a tremendous insight to his life in Ireland. I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to meet Liam and his wife, Pam, in person. For the past couple of years, my highlight in my life has been to visit Ballina/Killaloe, Ireland where he resides. I would anyone facing life-threatening situations to read this book. I give it 5+ stars.
