A Must Read for Christian Women!

In reading Leslie’s new book, The Set-Apart Woman, I’ve been deeply refreshed and inspired by the picture Leslie paints of what a truly set apart woman and Christ-centered life looks like. I’ve been corrected by God’s Spirit in areas where my own walk and life have grown lax. And yet, I’ve been spurred on by the hope of Christ in me, which is my enablement to live the way that He has called me to. Best of all, I’ve been captivated afresh by the glory of Christ’s Cross and the beauty that is wrapped up in living fully and only for Him!

Our hearts were made to crave more than this world has to offer—they were made for God Himself. This book’s message will leave you restless and uncomfortable if you’ve allowed subtle sins of the world to creep into Christ’s sacred seat in your life. If you and I are to truly be lights for Christ and lead others into His Kingdom, then we most certainly cannot blend into the likeness of this world and the flesh! Our lives must be startling different—entirely altered—completely set apart by and for Christ. Leslie powerfully articulates these truths and skillfully guides us into exploring the spiritual and practical dimensions of our lives to evaluate whether or not we are truly living in alignment with God’s Word. We are challenged and inspired to freshly forsake all in order to truly follow after Him in love and to truly be effective for the cause of His Kingdom here on this earth. Before I even got through the first chapter, already this book was challenging me to evaluate how I spent my time and if I was allowing any cultural frivolity into my behavior. This book challenged me to re-evaluate my priorities and pressed me to be even more passionate about Christ and His kingdom. I was reminded afresh that Christians are not called to be culturally savvy. Knowing the latest TV show jokes or movie quotes is not going to be what brings those in this generation to Christ. It is only by being set apart for Christ and living our lives in radical abandon to Him that the lost (or lukewarm) around us will see the joy and life that we have in Christ as something they are missing. In chapter two of The Set Apart Woman, Leslie writes these two powerful quotes:

“The world isn’t rejecting Christianity because we aren’t enough like the culture. Rather it’s because we are�too much�like it. There is nothing different about our lives, nothing that proves we have found something bigger to live for than temporary pleasure,�and certainly nothing that says we have found something worth dying for.”

“Nonbelievers will only be drawn [to Christ] when they see something real, something powerful, something far beyond what pop culture could ever hope to offer”�

As I’ve been pondering these words of wisdom, I’ve had such a renewed desire to live my life with an ever-present joy and yet set-apartness for Christ. I’ve been asking myself the question, “What really is the mark of a Christian?” and “What are the attributes that the world should be able to recognize in those that call themselves Christ’s followers?” As Leslie writes in her book, not only are we to be seen as “set apart,” but as followers of Jesus Christ, marked by joyful humility and courageous faithfulness. Because we have Jesus—the true Savior of this world and to whom is given the name of Love—in every situation we face, those around us should be able to see His life shining out of us. We should be marked by an unquenchable love for Him, a radiant joy in both the mundane tasks of everyday life and in its greatest trials, and a resilient courage to face all difficulties with absolute confidence because we reside in the unmovable rock of Jesus Christ.

I am so, so grateful for this book. Leslie's books have played a significant part in my walk with the Lord and I knew that The Set Apart Woman would be no different. With each chapter, the Lord used her words to challenge my heart, reveal subtle compromise in my life, and bring me back to a place of ardent devotion to Him. Leslie boldly tackles challenges that women face each day (building your life around Jesus, time management, fear, emotions, legalism, media, and more) with glorious Gospel truth. This isn't a feel-good book and its "no compromise" message is sure to press you to Christ, whether you have been walking with Him for 2 years or 20 years. I am overjoyed at the renewed refining work He is doing in my heart and life through this book!

About the Author
Lawrence D. Shriberg, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus of Communicative Disorders and a principal investigator in the Communicative and Cognitive Sciences Group, Waisman Center, University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research is centered on genetic and other origins of pediatric speech sound disorders of known and unknown origin.

Raymond D. Kent, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus of Communicative Disorders at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Complicated!

While I realize that I am a beginner in the study of Phonetics, I found this book to over-complicate things. My instructor would state things much more simply, and I found this book only to be confusing. Perhaps that will change once I know more about Phonetics, but I would not recommend this book to someone who is just starting out.

Lynch blends biography, filmography, spiritual quotes and his philosophical perspective on the life-changing capabilities of transcendental meditation, all within two and a half hours. Having practiced meditation for three decades, director Lynch discusses how it has influenced his life and helped him to concentrate his energy. Listeners may catch glimpses of creativity and consciousness, but Lynch's rants lack cohesion and substance. Within the audiobook's short chapters, Lynch barely broaches a topic before moving onto the next, leaving listeners to question his emphasis to go "deep." The most interesting aspects arise out of his anecdotes and comments about his films, like Eraserhead and Blue Velvet. His dry rattling voice hints at the passion behind his statements, but more often comes across as insistent and almost whiny. He reminds listeners that authors do not always make the best voices for their books. However, on the sound production end, the lightly blowing wind for the quotes from the Upanishads and Sutras adds mystical air to their reading. It's unfortunate that neither his words nor his voice live up to that standard.

It is just o.k., Lynch's thoughts on life, meditation, etc., in small easy to read doses.

I read some of the reviews and was curious about David Lynch's connection with meditation and his creativity. I'll admit I have only seen one Lynch product (Blue Velvet) which I found to be an excellent though bizarre film. The book kind of goes through his thoughts on life, meditation, making films and creative methods. It is a short read and feels like reading someone's thoughts that are jotted down in no particular order. I guess I was looking for a book that would really getting into the hows and whys of Mr. Lynch's creative process and meditation method vs. short thoughts, feelings and opinions. I guess if you are a huge fan of Mr. Lynch this book would give you bits and pieces of his thought process. Overall, I thought the book was just o.k.

Meditation, Creativity, and Film

This book has a lot of interesting information in it. David Lynch talks about his experience with Transcendental Meditation and its positive effects on him. He also talks about his strategies for living a life as an artist. And there are several different pages about the movies he's made, the actors in them, and his thoughts on film in general.

His biggest points are the importance of healthy living, the importance of meditation, and being your natural self. His advice for creativity, I thought, was pretty helpful for just about any artistic medium.

The book is pretty short. It doesn't go super in depth into any one topic. Mr. Lynch spends about a page or two on each idea. It's really interesting to hear everything in his direct voice, but some more detail would have been nice.

I loved how positive David Lynch seemed in the whole book. About the biggest thing I took from the book was his advice on being healthy yourself. He says, for an artist, you have to understand things like depression to create conflict in a story. But, if you, yourself, are depressed, it will be very hard to create. So he suggests different ways throughout the book to keep yourself healthy and still make art.

This was a great way to see into David Lynch's world through his own words. There's lots of great words, advice, and information, but it is very brief. But, if you're interested in David Lynch and his approach to life strategy, it's a great book.

An evening with David Lynch

I should start off my review by saying that I enjoyed this book and would recommend it highly. I purchased this book partially on whim after hearing verry little about it. I've always been fascinated by art and have been a musican since I was verry young. Recently I've been creativity frustrated and have been branching out into various adventures from exploring more interesting film to starting a modest meditation practice.

I recived my copy of the book after getting off work and finished it verry quickly. It's a verry easy read, its only 180 pages and around 80 something chapters. Each of the chapters explore various topics from film makers David Lynch admires to his meditation practice. This book feels like sitting down with David Lynch for an evening and just enjoying his unique perspective of the world. I treasure this book and it has inspired me.

She hones in on teens' delicate self-fashioning and how it's manipulated for profit by adult "teen trendspotters" who insinuate themselves into the lives of "Influencer" teens in order to cop "youth buzz." Quart is brilliant on the world in which teens "obsessed with brand names feel they have a lack that only superbranding will cover over." She gets great quotes in her first-person encounters with her mostly female subjects, giving the book real voice. And Quart's analyses-of teen movies, SAT tutoring (to improve scores and pose college choices as brands), teen SUV ownership and the role of parents-are sharp and funny. Her exploration of how teens internalize and express market logic-through a process of "self-branding" that can include teen boob jobs and kid-produced anorexia Weblogs-is original and striking. The book lacks a broad cultural perspective: most interviewees are white, middle class and female, so it's difficult for Quart to generalize about how American teens and tweens as a whole use money and products to define themselves. Nevertheless, by the end, readers should be able to spot certain youth demographics and deconstruct their branded worlds instantaneously-and with empathy and anger.

Elaborate Analysis of Youth Branding

Branding is all about inculcating meaning into the collective mind. Consumption in industrialized nations has led to dynamic branding activities. Advertisers are using sophisticated psychological techniques to create social tribes around their brands. Penetrating influence of the branding machine is enormous and quite effective (if it wasn't, there would be no Madison Avenue). The concept of selling to kids isn't new; the sooner you recognize THEIR needs, aspirations, peer pressure, etc., the sooner THEY will identify your brand as THEIR own. Brands reach deeper into the youth's psyche in order to become almost an intrinsic part of the very fabric of kids' lives. Alissa Quart's book demonstrates accurately the process of creating loyal customers by advertisers. According to a survey of Americans aged 18 to 24, two-thirds cannot find Louisiana on a U.S. map. At the same time our children can perfectly recognize the golden arches.
"Branded: The Buying And Selling Of Teenagers" is a well-structured, informative book. Quart's vernacular is plain, clear, and unpretentious. As a professional brand consultant I recognize this book as a significant contribution to the ongoing development of branding discipline.

"Corporate pedophilia" and your children

Alissa Quart's "Branded" explores how America's youth are increasingly subjected to sophisticated but ultimately predatory forms of corporate marketing and branding. While the social reproduction of labor has been defined by capitalist requirements for many years, Ms. Quart amply demonstrates that the co-optation of today's youth has deepened and intensified. For many, the immersion in consumerism is so all-encompassing that it threatens to corrupt and corrode their mental self-images and possibly inhibit their ability to function as enlightened citizens.
Ms. Quart shows that the marketing tactics used are often invasive and unscrupulous, amounting to a sort of "corporate pedophilia" whose aim is to grow the corporate bottom line at the expense of childhood itself. Indeed, the author explains that whole classes of products (such as sexually-provocative undergarments designed for pre-teen girls) are unapologetically marketed to ever-younger children, thereby accelerating the pace at which children develop, perceive and interact with their surroundings. Ms. Quart blasts the justifications used by marketers to defend such indefensible actions and alerts us to the moral vacuousness that lies at the heart of the corporate agenda.
Ms. Quart argues that our children bear unmistakable psychological, physical and financial scars from this assault. Media-induced anxiety leads boys to steroid abuse and girls to anorexia; social acceptance is garnered by the flaunting of expensive designer clothes and accessories; class status is predicated by admission to brand-name colleges; and so on. The end result is a hyper-competitive, anxious and debt-ridden generation of youths who collectively are getting locked into the cycle of labor and consumption at a significantly earlier age than their predecessors.
It may be true that Ms. Quart's work depends heavilly on observations drawn from the ranks of upper middle-class society, but she has impressively succeeded in describing a phenomenon that has largely eluded others. The reader is impressed by the author's ability to synthesize scholarly research, pop culture, business information, anecdotes and first-person interviews to make her case. In short, this is original and cutting-edge research that should give inquisitive readers much to ponder.
I recommend this book to parents of teenagers (like myself) who want to understand more about the brave new world their children are inhabiting as well as to teenagers who want to critically deconstruct and reclaim their branded selves.

About the Author
Larry Krieger earned his B.A. and M.A.T. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his M.A. from Wake Forest University. In a career spanning more than 35 years, Mr. Krieger taught a variety of AP� subjects including U.S. History, World History, European History, American Government, and Art History. His popular courses were renowned for their energetic presentations, commitment to scholarship, and dedication to helping students achieve high scores.

OUTSTANDING AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I teach 3 sections of APUSH. My goal is for all of my students to achieve scores of 3 or above. Many of my students have asked me to recommend an APUSH prep book. I am preparing evaluations of the leading books. Here are the pros and cons of REA's Crash Course:
PROS:
1. The book is closely aligned with both the APUSH Framework and Exam. It provides strong coverage of expected topics such as the First and Second Red Scares and unexpected but often-tested topics such as the Hetch Hetchy controversy.
2. The book provides exceptional coverage of African American history, Women's history, and Native American history. A firm knowledge of these three topics all but assures earning a 3.
3. Synthesis is the hardest point to earn in the DBQ and LEQ rubrics. Crash Course contains about 50 Making Connection features designed to provide Synthesis examples. For example, one feature points out that the Stamp Act boycott can be compared with the Montgomery Bus Boycott while another feature points out how Edison's "inventions factory" at Menlo Park can be compared with the great research facilities in Silicon Valley.
4. Crash Course has a very strong evaluation program. The final four chapters provide excellent explanations and annotated examples of multiple-choice, short-answer, DBQ, and long-essay questions. In addition, the Online Practice Test is outstanding.
5. Long Essay exam questions have focused on Turning Points in American history. Crash Course has 12 Turning Point features on expected topics such as the Kansas-Nebraska Act and unexpected topics such as the Counterculture in the 1960s.
CONS:
1. As noted above, the Making Connections and Turning Point features are excellent. A list following the Table of Contents would make these features easier to find.
2. An end-of-book index would enable users to quickly locate key topics.
3. The Online Test is excellent. The inside cover page does provide an Access Code. However, many students (and even teachers) may miss the page. I recommend that REA also provide the Access Code and information about the test before the four strategy chapters beginning on page 299.
OVERALL EVALUATION: An outstanding and highly recommended book. The strengths far outweigh the weaknesses.

Hands down the single best review book

Hands down the single best review book out there. One of my friends who took apush last year recommended that I buy it to use for the class and exam - he used the last edition and got a 5 and an A in the class. I used this one to study for my Unit 6 test, and got a full score on the SAQ and only one wrong on MC. Our class is a bit behind, so I've been using the book to get ahead on the AP curriculum. I showed my teacher the Crash Course book and she was also really impressed. She's seen past exams and said the book focuses on everything important and leaves out unnecessary details. This book is definitely a must-have for anyone taking apush.

That is a great advantage now that time is short

Larry Krieger's "AP US History Crash Course" prep book published by REA has always been my recommendation for last month prep for the APUSH exam. Unlike all the other prep books I am aware of on the market, this one is REALLY SHORT. That is a great advantage now that time is short. I'll give you an example: my son was a not-very-conscientious APUSH student. He used to say, "Why should I learn US History, Dad? If I need to know something, all I have to do is text you and I'll get an entire lecture, free of charge!" But, as his exam loomed, he figured out he was on his own. I gave him Krieger's book and said, "Read this four times and you'll do fine." There was a month to go and he did. Got a 5. Repetition is the key. ALL the info in Krieger is essential and very concise. He provides good test tips. Though a very vocal critic of the CB REDESIGN, Krieger reworked the book to conform to the new framework and the 4th edition (now only $8 on Amazon!) can be recommended with confidence. But reading it multiple times is the secret. If you have smart slackers in your class, they--like my slacker son--can still get ready for the test and do well.
