After his father's death in 1870, Robert E. "Lee" Wilson inherited 400 acres of land in Mississippi County, Arkansas. Over his lifetime, he transformed that inheritance into a 50,000-acre lumber operation and cotton plantation. Early on, Wilson saw an opportunity in the swampy local terrain, which sold for as little as fifty cents an acre, to satisfy an expanding national market for Arkansas forest reserves. He also led the fundamental transformation of the landscape, involving the drainage of tens of thousands of acres of land, in order to create the vast agricultural empire he envisioned.

A consummate manager, Wilson employed the tenancy and sharecropping system to his advantage while earning a reputation for fair treatment of laborers, a reputation -- Whayne suggests -- not entirely deserved. He cultivated a cadre of relatives and employees from whom he expected absolute devotion. Leveraging every asset during his life and often deeply in debt, Wilson saved his company from bankruptcy several times, leaving it to the next generation to successfully steer the business through the challenges of the 1930s and World War II.

Delta Empire traces the transition from the labor-intensive sharecropping and tenancy system to the capital-intensive neo-plantations of the post--World War II era to the portfolio plantation model. Through Wilson's story Whayne provides a compelling case study of strategic innovation and the changing economy of the South in the late nineteenth century.

Jeannie Whayne is a professor of history at the University of Arkansas. She has authored, coauthored, or edited ten books, including A New Plantation South: Land, Labor, and Federal Favor in Twentieth-Century Arkansas, Shadows over Sunnyside: Evolution of a Plantation in Arkansas, 1830--1945, and Arkansas Delta: A Land of Paradox. She is past-president of the Agricultural History Society, a distinguished lecturer with the Organization of American Historians, a member of the executive board of the Southern Historical Association, and recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Arkansas Historical Association.

Part of the ASEP Coaching series, the Sport First Aid course covers everything from ingrown toenails and jock itch to cardiac arrest. The reference materials, reference card and descriptions of both typical situations and symptoms, as well as first aid steps are both useful and easy to understand.

Only read this book if you want your business to GROW!

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Miriam through the National Association of Nutrition Professionals (NANP), a professional business league for holistically trained nutrition professionals and students. In 2007 the NANP surveyed its professional members on their ability to earn a living in our industry. The results were dismal; with only 10% able to make a satisfactory living, and many of those working multiple jobs to do so. The results of this survey helped us focus our attention on putting nutrition professionals to work, and making that our number one priority. At that time our association had been stagnant itself, with little or no growth for several years. As Vice President of our association, Miriam has been an integral part of teaching me and my team how to break away from the immobile perspectives of the past, and move us into a new and dynamic, purpose-filled marketing shift. With her help, our membership has doubled over the past 2 years and continues to grow rapidly. This book is perfect for any practitioner who truly wants to grow their business in order to help and heal, and for any business owner who is ready to embrace phenomenal growth.

My wife gave me a copy of Miriam Zacharias's book. "Please read this and give me your opinion." Our marketing, after a 15 year run, was faltering, but, reading a book titled "The PEACE Process" gave me hesitation. I figured it was another squishy, hippie attempt to break into publishing after failing at alternative healthcare. How many of those books have we all read? I was wrong, Miriam was high up in the food chain of business prior to her moving into the integrative and functional healthcare world. She brings this business knowledge into the alternative healthcare profession, that was not taught anything about business in school. It's back to school, get your working hat on, she knows her business and ours, and wants us to succeed.

As an Integrative physician who has through trial and error created a very successful practice model, I can only say I *WISH* I could have had access to this book earlier! It would have shaved years off of my learning curve, saving me both time, money and frustration!! The PEACE process gives a step-by-step framework to build a successful holistic practice. This book is a must read for anyone wanting to succeed in our 'well-care' industry.

Excellent basic book for CXR interpretation

This is a fairly basic book about CXRs, that can help you review the most important abnormal CXR findings. Appropriate for non-radiology interns/residents. I'm in internal medicine and bought this book to refresh my memory about the basics of the CXR.

The book is organized into 11 chapters:
1. How to look at a chest X-ray
2. Localizing lesions
3. The CT scan
4. The white lung field
5. The black lung field
6. The abnormal hilum
7. The abnormal heart shadow
8. The widened mediastinum
9. Abnormal ribs
10. Abnormal soft tissues
11. The hidden abnormality

Pros:
The book provides systematic teaching of CXR interpretation. The bullet-point style is very helpful for learning and reviewing.
A good supplement to this book is >100 Chest X-ray problems< by the same authors.

Cons:
Overall the picture quality is decent, but sometimes the pictures are a little bit too small to see the abnormalities clearly.
There are also a few CT scans, but not enough.
This book is very basic. You will want to look for a more in-depth book afterwards.
This book is overpriced. It is small (fits into a coat pocket) and has only 169 pages.

Would I buy it again? Yes, this book served my purposes of getting a quick and dirty refresher in CXR interpretation with lots of CXR examples.

If you are looking for a book for Bayesian estimation, this is the one. The first several chapters say it all about Bayesian methods. The rest of the book is applications. Very helpful reading for learning the method.

Best introductory Bayesian book

This is the best introductory Bayesian book for advanced undergraduate or first-year graduate students, especially in the social sciences. All concepts are explained in depth and illustrated with plenty of examples. I only wish that the publisher used a nicer-looking font for typesetting the book.

I'm taking an intro to Bayesian stats class and we are using the Carlin & Louis book -- it is a POS.

I found this book in the library and it is much better. It gives very clear explanations of the ideas, and lots of concrete worked examples. Props to the author.
