Not appropriate for these parts

We're big Clifford fans in my household (as evidenced by other highly positive book reviews! really!). I had high hopes for this classic Clifford from 1966, but we should have skipped this book. The reality is that I have to teach my 4 and 6 year old boys how to react if they encounter a bear (or mountain lion), which is a real probability even in residential areas around here. Picking up and hugging bear cubs has a good chance of leading to your demise. Yes, Clifford saves Emily's day (and life), but it's just inconvenient to have to remind my boys that this is just a pretend story and don't count on Clifford. Time to move on to a Clifford book we can simply enjoy without the safety reminder from Dad.

Lovable Clifford!

In this Clifford book, Clifford is left behind when Emily Elizabeth and her family go on vacation (too far for Clifford to walk). While my toddler would love any Clifford book right now, this is one of his favorites since it has a bus on the cover, and bears and a semi-truck inside. Plus, we both love the ending!

Encyclopedic

The cinema from Hong Kong's golden era is like no other. Kinetic, bizarre, graphic, violent, brutal, artful, beautiful, hilarious, the films ran the gamut. They had higher highs and lower lows then their western counterparts during this era. Highly influential on American cinema throughout the 90's, the films were notoriously difficult to find if you even knew what to look for to begin with. The films were imported, often times through grey market companies using dodgy prints, and sold in specialty stores around the country. Sometimes you could find some gold at your local mom & pop video store but more often than not you had to go beyond the safety of your favorite store and venture out into the wide world or roll the dice on films out of shady catalogs. Still the power of the films made the hunt worth it and crossed all barriers of difficulty. Keeping the films straight was tough. A reference guide was needed big time, enter The Hong Kong Filmography by John Charles.

The Hong Kong Filmography boasts 1,100 (!) reviews of Hong Kong cinema from 1977-1997. That is a ton of films to come from a tiny island in a mere 20 years. The crazy thing is, i'm sure there are probably hundreds (or more) films that the author didn't review during that era. The book covers traditional kung fu films, heroic bloodshed action flicks, comedies, romantic films, dramas, and even some naughty adult fare. This endows the book with an encyclopedic quality that wont' be rivaled anytime soon. Each film has extensive notes on the writers/actors/directors etc, run times, plot summary, succinct and well written review, as well as a rating out of a possible 10 points.

The book is a pleasure to thumb through and scan the page until something catches your eye. The information contained within the pages is authoritative, heck Tim Lucas even wrote the foreword for this beast. If you're looking into digging deeper into the wild world of Hong Kong cinema this book has you covered with plenty of great films to go out and find. To this day many of the titles covered in this book are hard to find so even after over a decade since it's original publication it's still a powerful tool in the hunt for quality HK cinema. You're not just going to stumble upon these flicks on Netflix. You'll have to dig deep to find the treasures contained within. Thankfully, you now have a guide to get you to the gold.

Highly recommended guide to Hong Kong film

1100 reviews of classic Hong Kong cinema. Buy this book so that they will publish a sequel. Lots of information, including actors full names so that you can know which Tony Leung is in the film. I've owned the book for 7 years and still use it as a reference guide. Highly recommended for fans of Video Watchdog.

About the Author
Kelly Blessinger is the Reference Assistant Coordinator at Louisiana State University (LSU) Libraries. In this role, she assists in the daily supervision and operation of the department. She organizes training for all new hires in the department and coordinates continuing education for the library. She served on the Library Mentoring Committee, the Library Faculty Policy Committee, the LSU Faculty Senate, and currently, the University Council on Women.

Paul Hrycaj is an Instruction and Reference Librarian at LSU. He has served on the American Library Association Instruction Section Planning Committee, the LSU Library Faculty Policy Committee, and the LSU Faculty Senate. Paul has been chair of and participated in numerous search committees and has given presentations to LSU Libraries’ faculty and staff on the process of hiring new faculty members.

Their operating frequency is not imposed by either the input or the output, both of which are at zero frequency. A frequency which is much greater than that of the industrial network can be chosen, provided that suitable configurations and semiconductor devices are used. This is the first difference compared to the rectifiers and AC-AC converters, analyzed in the previous volumes and which often operate at the industrial network frequency. The second difference concerns the commutation mode. Choppers operate in forced commutation. The beginning of an operating phase does not auto� matically turn off the semiconductor devices which were conducting during the previous phase and which have to be brought to the blocking state. This turn-off must be carried out autonomously. These two differences - the higher frequency of commutations and, espe� cially, the different mode of commutation -justify the first two chapters in this work: - Chapter 1 examines general notions concerning converters, supplies and loads, and more especially, how they can be characterized with regard to commutations.

About the Author
