Jeremy Bullard is an author, an amateur singer/songwriter, a hobby knifemaker, a TV buff, and a recovering MMORPGamer. A Book Full of Surprises

The story of Gemworld is rich in detail, scenery, and a wonderful, fast paced adventure. I read this book in exchange for an honest review and I loved it.

I loved following the story of Sal. Its starts as a mission as a Navy Seal and a fall and eye loss, he ends up in a world of magic. The last thing anyone expected.

His adventures in this world are just the turning point and the actions scenes put you right in the middle of the action. At one point, I was so engrossed in a war scene (on a flying animal -- I'll let you guess which one) and for a moment, I forgot I was reading. I was there. I saw the action unfold before me as if I were standing on the sidelines. I love the explanation of jewels and the relation to magic as a tool as opposed to a force of power.

I can't wait for the next book. And enjoyable fantasy and wonderful read.

What an Imagination!

What an Imagination! I was impressed from the start with the vivid pictures this author created in my mind while keeping everything somehow almost believable.The story starts out as a normal Navy SEAL episode but quickly develops into an alternate reality, which the author cleverly weaves into a "gotta read more" epic novel. The characters are well-defined within some wonderful description of them and their world of the elements and gem powers. I quickly understood who the Crafter is in the book, as well as many other spiritual facets included in the tale. Since my husband liked it as well (and he is very picky), I can recommend this book (and have) to fantasy lovers, both male and female, and a wide range of age groups. One doesn't like any good book to end, but this author did a good job of wrapping up the current crisis and leaving the rest for the future unveiling of something to look forward to.

An Enjoyable Story

A very creative take on this style of genre. It is well written and contains some intriguing characters.
My main issues with it was the over use of foreshadowing, along with the feeling that the ending felt unfinished. It left me feeling extremely disappointed in the overall story and forced me to downgrade my rating from a four star book to the three I gave it.
I do look forward to the next book in the series.

Badly researched and full of errors; don't bother!

I found this book to be one of the worst I've read about Nicholas II. Blatant errors make it obvious the author didn't do his research, which in turn makes it difficult to take anything "new" he comes up with seriously. All in all, I'd say this book is *extremely* unreliable, and lacks any other special qualities to make it a worthwhile read. There have been any number of reliable, interesting, entertaining biographies of Nicholas II written-- I advise you don't waste your time with this one.

Disappointing...

The fact that it was written by an "eminent historian" does not make up for the serious weak points this book possesses. Its description misleads the reader into believing the book will contain personal, detailed accounts of the last Tsar's family life, but all it contains are common general knowledge statements. What Ferro does seem to concentrate on is Nicholas's political life--particularly its failures. He seems to nitpick at the Tsar's every weak point, and the only thing Ferro does well is unfairly bash the character of this most noble emperor. This book is bland; it reads like a boorish supermarket tabloid--and just as trashy

A one star is overrating this thing

Not only does the book have BIG print, few pages, and lots of fluff, it is both historically and culturally incorrect. It surmises that the Revoution was inevitable due to the actions of the ruling Tsar - WRONG. The Revolution occurred because of Lenin and WWI. In 1913, Russia's economy was fastest growing in Europe. She had liberalized and was coming into the modern world. Lenin's propaganda railed at military losses when in fact she was successful on 3 of the 4 fronts where she was engaged.
The section headings, "Rule by Rasputin", "Nicholas rejects the Russians", etc says a lot about the historicity of this work. It does not even explain the Revolution well and how a motley crew of foreign-trained malcontents took control of the vast Russian Empire. For a good work ont he subject of the Romanons get NICHOLAS and ALEXANDRA - excellent work.

About the Author
Dr Beck is a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Diagnosis and Neurology in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Murdoch University, Perth, Australia; and Associate Professor, Clinical Neurology at the Carrick Institute for Graduate Studies, Florida, USA. He is also Director of the Institute of Functional Neuroscience, in Perth, Australia.

Dr Beck graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1984 and the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, Toronto, Canada in 1988. He has subsequently completed a PhD focusing on psycho-neuroimmunology and spent the last 12 years practicing and developing the clinical applications of functional neurology. Falls Short...

I am a practicing Functional Neurologist and I bought this book as a resource for neurological pathways and mechanisms and it DOES PROVIDE THIS INFORMATION. So as a reference I would give this book 5/5. However it is a dry read and poorly organized with little to no emphasis on treatment modalities other than some very lame chiropractic manipulation therapy in the back of the book. What about eye exercises, UBE, oxygen, vibration stimulation, laser, spin chair therapy etc... The book left me wanting more from a title that states for manual therapy practitioners. I really wanted more meat for my money. In today's web based information platform tech info is basically free for those who google hard enough, if I am spending money on a hard copy I want it to shine and be complete. Perhaps there is a second edition that contains this missing treatment information. I would suggest Evolve Your Brain, Dr. Joe Dispenza for non therapists and Dr. Mike Johnson's, "What to do when the medications don't work" as a entry level book for therapists looking to actually treat with functional neurology.

Functional Neurology for Practitioners of Manual Medicine is the sine qua non book for any chiropractor, acupuncturist, naturopath, MD, DO, neurologically oriented physical therapist, OT, or anyone consumed by the subject. It along with its accompanying DVD, is an entire course into what will be the 21st century leap from restorative medicine into re-organizational healing. It is well written and thoughtfully presented, but is surely not for the dilettante. Drink deeply or taste not.

Great reference manual

This book is very helpful, especially if you're taking anything with Carrick. I have notes from seminars and this book is great for filling in the gaps that I had in my notes. Dr. Beck did a great job keeping things simple to understand and thorough enough to be a valuable clinical reference.

Full Disclosure Might Help

I'm fascinated to read about ancient history and the Middle East in particular. When I found that for $0.99 I could download a book that covered Ancient Greece, Egypt, Babylon, the Hittites, the Assyrians, and more, I jumped at the chance. Caveat emptor, friends. Mr. Hall's content is fine, if you can get past his tedious language. It's obvious that he was an Egyptologist, since he handles the material with a lighter touch. As I read on, I realized that the author was British (no crime, obviously), but his use of language seemed stilted, almost archaic. For example, he uses "shew" instead of "show." Later, he made reference to a situation that involved the British in India. Okay, Britain hasn't owned India since the late 1940s, so we're beginning to narrow the field. I eventually checked "Henry R. Hall" in Wikipedia, and here's what I found: The author's correct name is Henry R. H. Hall. He wrote this particular work in 1913. If I want to read a 100-year-old book, I have every right to do so. I'd just like to know what exactly I'm reading when Amazon offers no information concerning the author or copyright date of the material, other than their Kindle publication date. I shouldn't have to research the author elsewhere to get the story. Those of you who are old hands at ebooks likely will scoff at my irritation, and you might be right. As I said, caveat emptor. I get it. Still, had I known I would have been forced to wade through century-old language and miss out on the latest findings, I would have spent more money and downloaded something else.

Great guide

This book has lots to offer to aspiring gin students, of which I count myself one.Those around me have treated it more or less magically, as a necessity for their beloved gin&tonic or martini. I admit I've treated it in a perfunctory way when ordering an Orange Blossom - a Screwdriver with gin instead of vodka. But, of late, I've developed an interest in some more complex kinds of flavor profiles. And, given the number of flavorants now used in various gins, the genre certainly has plenty to offer.

I certainly admire Broom's thoroughness in pursuing gin's history as a beverage and as a social phenomenon - actually, an ongoing and living sequence of phenomena. But, I must admit, history per se holds little interest for me. And, as much as I enjoyed reading about the hundred-plus gins that Broom evaluates, I probably won't sample (or even find) more than a relative few of them, let alone the arcana of the cocktail recipes at the end. Then, as an inveterate DIY-er, Broom's convincing case for leaving it to the pros left me a bit let down.

What I take away from this, despite its problems, is an approach to thinking about my experience of a fine product, finely presented. Although florid a times, it offers a language for describing the experience - but one that demands good familiarity with many of the flavorants in isolation. It reinforces the fact that a mouth feels as much as it tastes, and that matters to the drinking experience. Then there's the flavor analogy to a fact that colorists know well, that color can be perceived very differently according to other colors nearby. Likewise, experience of a flavor depends greatly on the flavors it's paired with. And, as you might experience a musical motif differently as a tune progresses, flavors also progress. Different elements present themselves in the first chilled sip, then as it warms in your mouth, then as you breath it out through the nose's rich analytic senses.

So, the direct content of this book didn't offer what I might have hoped - not that any book actually could have. Instead, its language and analytic approach gave me far more than I expected. Among other things, it caused me to reconsider a gin I found at a tasting just lately. It seemed to me inauthentic, too fruity and sweet. Well, if I taste it again, I might not like it any better. I will, however, take it more seriously, consider what goals it tries to achieve (even if not mine), and place it along a much broader spectrum than I knew gins could span.

Lovely companion to Whisky the Manual. It provides a good starting point for exploring gin and its combinations. I would like to see it progress into testing/tasting widely available gins with the various widely available mixers (how does Tanquery taste with Scweppes vs Canada Dry vs Seagrams tonic water?).
