Yamamoto & YohjiFrom Rizzoli

Since the early ’80s, Yohji Yamamoto’s groundbreaking silhouettes and innovative design aesthetic have propelled him to the highest rank of the international avant-garde. Distinguished by his anti-fashion approach, Yamamoto changed the face of contemporary fashion, radically transforming it with asymmetrical and highly conceptual designs partly inspired by the techniques of traditional Japanese kimonos. His vision came as a refreshing contrast to the power suits and brightly clad fashions of the time, forcing a reconsideration of the future direction of fashion. In YAMAMOTO & YOHJI, this luxuriously bound book explores all the major themes in his forty years of counter-fashion design showing for the very first time his work not only on the Yamamoto brands but as well on his brand Y’s and these various collaborations in architecture, movies, plays, literature.

Illustrated with photographs by Craig McDean, Inez & Vinoodh, Max Vadukul and Nick Knight, each chapter elaborates on a particular theme—his sartorial philosophy, influential extensions into scenography, runway shows, monographic exhibitions, and costume design—and is anchored by an essay or interview that lends crucial insight to the story of Yohji Yamamoto, one of the most enigmatic and iconoclastic fashion designers of our time.

A pretentious waste
By close reader
I guess that the people who designed this book were trying to be chic and artsy rather than trying to produce anything useful. When I buy a book about fashion and design, I want to be able to SEE the designs. On the few pages that actually have photos of the styles, the pictures are tiny, lost in huge white spaces that could have been used to print larger photos where one could see details. Then there are the pages of huge close-ups, but these are usually grainy, blurry or otherwise "artistically" rendered. What a waste of paper and ink. I have many fashion and design books, but this is the first one I'm going to return. Even with Amazon's generous discount, it's a very high price to pay for such an unrewarding volume.

A great encyclopedia of Yohji Yamamoto material, but clothes could be better presented
By Jonathan B Tiu
This cloth bound book is an excellent source of material from the world of Yohji Yamamoto. If you are looking for details on individual garments and outfits, then you will likely find it a bit lacking. For me, a large appeal of the Japanese designer lies in his philosophy, and in this aspect, the book succeeds as an encyclopedia of Mr. Yamamoto's creative output. The first chapter of the book, "Philosophy," is very quotable; it begins with 3 pages recounting the designer's relationship with his mother, Fumi Yamamoto, and ends with the 1985 interview by Yvonne Baby. The text throughout the book is also very informative about the history of the brand. A later 20 page segment of the book includes gorgeous photographs of runway show invitations, including one particularly beautiful invitation based on Heian period knotted love letters. The book is also filled with poems and essays written by collaborators of the designer.

What about the clothes? This book contains thumbnails from runway shows as well as photos of the designer's stores, art shows, and his work from film and stage productions. The runway photos, complete through the Fall 2014 season, are comically small in size and quantity (at least the entire slideshows are easily available online). I would have also liked to see close ups of some of the garments and perhaps more info about the textiles and the construction. I haven't had the opportunity to read the other books about the designer, but I did enjoy Wim Wender's "Notebook on Cities and Clothes" and I felt this book captures a similar vibe. This is a comprehensive volume that is recommended for fans of the designer, especially at Amazon's discount. But like many works of art the book distances itself from the reader in a way.

but happy content rich
By Hideo Tsurugi
It was slightly smaller than the feeling that we saw in Tsutaya of Daikanyama, but happy content rich.
