Gr 5–8—In 1853, Commodore William Perry led a fleet of imposing black ships into Edo Bay and began negotiations that would end Japan's 200-year policy of isolationism. This companion novel to Preus's Newbery Honor-winning Heart of a Samurai (Abrams, 2010) explores the political upheaval during this time through the eyes of two boys, one Japanese and one American. Inquisitive boys with big dreams, Yoshi is a lowly servant to a samurai and Jack is a cabin boy on one of Perry's black ships. Through dual narration and clear, unhindered prose, the boys' perspectives mirror both sides of the tense relations between the two cultures. In a series of coincidences, Yoshi becomes the assistant to Manjiro Nakahama, the protagonist of the previous volume. Readers will be pleased to reacquaint themselves with Manjiro as he takes Yoshi under his wing and plays an instrumental role in negotiations between Japan and America. Though some may find the plot a bit heavy on politics and diplomacy, the story shines when Jack is separated from his party and Yoshi is obliged to shelter him, and the two boys forge an unlikely friendship that transcends cultural and language barriers. A comprehensive author's note fills in the historical context that shapes the narrative and Japanese woodblock print illustrations from the era add atmosphere to the text. A Great Boys-Own Adventure for Younger Readers

I was just thinking about when I could suggest "Treasure Island" or "Kidnapped" to the grandsons and I was a bit stumped. Both books are whiz bang adventures, but they are old-fashioned enough and complex enough, especially "Kidnapped", that I feared they might be daunting for a young reader just moving beyond chapter books. Then I happened to pick up an ARC of this book and my quandry was resolved in a most happy fashion.
This book struck me as a very solid introduction to exactly the type of book I was thinking about. It is set in 1853 and the action surrounds the opening of Japan by Commodore Perry. The first hero we meet, Yoshi, is a Japanese serving boy who has become an adventure seeking runaway. Our second hero, Jack, is a cabin boy from Perry's fleet who has become separated from his fellows. Under the cloud and confusion of the events surrounding Perry's mission to Japan the two join forces to thwart assassins, save Yoshi's famous master, survive various and exciting threats and dangers, and get Jack back safely to his ship.
The book has action, the exotic Japanese setting, the romance of adventuring, an authentic and deep historical feel, the appeal of a meeting of East and West in the form of the boys' partnership, swordplay and cannons. During the course of their adventures the boys meet interesting characters, hear many stories and tales, and teach each other about their cultures. There's also lots of running, hiding, lurking and boy sized heroics. There is humor, drama and suspense. This is exactly the type of book I was thinking about.
And it's written at the level I wanted. Sentences are direct and to the point, but not simple. Chapters are brief and the pacing is fast. Scenes are set and characters are described, but it all has a slightly breathless feel that races the boys along. Vocabulary, grammar and syntax are all sophisticated but still aimed at younger readers ready to step up a bit into more advanced books.
This book struck me as a very appealing candidate to serve as a bridge between chapter books and more demanding fare, and that aside it is a ripping adventure with a novel historical background. A nice find.

Meaty read for middle schoolers fond of historical adventure

Samurai lore, quite a bit of history, and likable 13-year-olds Yoshi and Jack make THE BAMBOO SWORD a mix of readable and intellectually worthwhile. Yoshi is a servant class Japanese boy in the 1850's, and Jack is a "powder monkey" (young and expendable crew member) on one of Commodore Perry's ship. Those familiar with Preus's companion book HEART OF A SAMURAI will welcome back Manjiro, a Japanese boy who was adopted by a sea captain and helped smooth the way for trade (and understanding) between the US and Japan.
Five Stars says "I love it" when I hover, but I'm using it to mean "This book is really good"
The plot alternates between Yoshi, who dons his young master's clothes and comes to travel with Manjiro; and red-haired Jack, who comes ashore with Perry and finds himself involved in adventure with Yoshi. The story never feels forced-- events are not piled on just for the sake of adding bigger thrills and more explosions. Instead, the writing assumes an intelligent (middle school aged) reader, which is a big plus, in my opinion. The excitement builds naturally as the "hairy barbarians" (the Japanese view of Westerns) and the Japanese islanders meet each other. The occasional drawings (every 15-20 pages or so) add nice breaks in the text.
Easy to recommend to middle schoolers who like to read, especially in tandem with HEART OF A SAMURAI.
